Texas was one of a minority of states that did not implement a forced sterilization law even though eugenics thoroughly saturated the culture. We explore the reason for that outcome.
Last Tuesday, Betsy Friauf and I made presentations at Texas A&M University based on our book “The Purifying Knife: The Troubling History of Eugenics in Texas.” We had a good crowd that asked smart questions. On Tuesday we bring our road show to Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.
Thanks again for including us, @americanstudier.bsky.social. In our interview we discuss “sportswashing” in past world sports events and the need for Dallas to establish human rights standards before the World Cup comes to town.

There’s nothing exceptional about villains. In some times and places they form a working majority.

I love Dominic's attitude in this photo, taken from around the time he was 12.

Hadi Jawad (co-founder of Human Rights Dallas), Dr. Rick Halperin (SMU's Human Rights Program director), and me were interviewed by Kathleen Thompson of Progress Texas about human rights in Dallas as the city prepares to host the World Cup games this summer.

In this essay, I discuss the odious career of the late Dallas DA Henry Wade of Roe v. Wade fame and urge the county to take his name off of the juvenile justice center.

The president you elected twice bragging about the war crimes he's about to commit. Nice Easter message. I'm tired of being grossed out by my country.
Pam Bondi, we hardly knew ye. That was quite enough.
As bad as Boomer Republicans and older are, young Republicans who grew up in the Trump era are much, much worse.

Betsy and Ghazan Abdullah.
@betsyfriauf.bsky.social and I heard an inspiring talk at a special Refugee Shabbat hosted by a Jewish congregation in Dallas this past Friday. (For security, I won't say where.) Ghazan Abdullah, of the Mosaic Family Services Program, told us of the hardships refugees face in the U.S. today.

This is one of my favorite photos of Betsy Friauf of all time. I couldn't ask for a better co-author, travel companion, fellow fighter for justice, and friend.
Black and white head shot of longtime Dallas DA Henry Wade.
It's time to remove Henry Wade's name from the Dallas County Juvenile Justice Center. Wade, made infamous for his part in the Roe v. Wade case, was Dallas DA from 1951-1988. He railroaded innocent people to the electric chair & persecuted the LGBTQ+ community. There are better people to honor.
