As a fellow Gen Xer, I'd point out wages were lower as well. I'd also point out that the prices of some things have fallen—e.g., electronic devices—& other things, like clothing prices, have remained fairly stable.

That said, yes, there's been a big bump in prices recently that has affected us all.
