An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.
New paper alert🚨
In this new article in @natgeosci.nature.com we use a multidisciplinary approach (geochemistry, geophysics and mathematically modelling) to see pulsing in the mantle plume beneath Afar and how the flow varies along the rift See the 🧵 below:

Every year, billions of vehicles worldwide shed an estimated 6 million tonnes of tire fragments. These tiny flakes of plastic, generated by normal driving, account for 28% of microplastics entering the environment globally.
Heavy vehicles eg SUVs/EVs especially.

Few technologies have been met with such a barrage of misinformation as heat pumps have.
@carbonbrief.org just dropped a brand-new version of my heat pump myths factcheck. Have a look here 👇

The scientific community is at a pivotal moment right now. And we are seeing things start to shift. Now is the time for scientists and scientific institutions to step up. No one is coming to save us. 🧵

New: A NOAA lab in Hawaii that is connected to the longest-running observation of global greenhouse gas concentrations is slated for closure in August, according to a list of lease terminations Democratic members of Congress shared with @washingtonpost.com.
This week I was at @climatecerege.bsky.social to meet colleagues and sample some cores and I stayed to join the women’s demo on March 8th - what a blast!
This is a brilliant resource!! Please share widely!

One might think that Nazi crimes and palaeontology never overlapped, and yet... Have you ever wondered what happened to tens of palaeontologists & geologists in the Nazi-occupied Poland? How academics helped to bring down the fascist regime. And a curious story of Schindler-equivalent in geology. 🧵

8. What’s #next? 1) estimating #FloodMagnitude (volume water) -> hydrological models. 2) Identifying relevant climate modes -> climate models. 3) Elucidating #rainfall dynamics on annual-centennial timescales -> paleo-records & #models (PMIP4 protocols!) #paleoclimates
Waterfall on the Blue Nile river in West Gojjam, Amhara Region, Ethiopia. This region is threatened by natural hazards such as flooding due to climate change. (Copyright: CCBY 2.0 Giustino)
7. Why is that #important to know? 1) warmer climates will lead to an increase in regional variability design #infrastructure (flood protection). 2) knowing #pacemakers #predicting extreme #floods early-warning systems in #vulnerable regions.
Picture showing the inside of a Nilometer building in Cairo (Egypt). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nilometer for references and more information on Nilometers
6. These were also found in records of past #Nile levels from ancient Egyptians during the #CommonEra (so-called #Nilometer records) -> stationarity of climatic forcing/#teleconnections under different climates
5. We also detected climatic #pacemakers: El Nino Southern Oscillation #ENSO (<10 yr timescales) and multi-decadal oscillations (50-100 yr)
Record of past floods of the Nile during the wetter North African Humid Period (7,500-9,500 yrs ago). Top: thickness of flood layers with green (yellow) thicker (thinner) layers indicating stronger (weaker) floods and the median thickness in black. Intervals of stronger floods also have a larger variability. Bottom: wavelet analysis of the thickness record with strong and significant signals (yellow) showing a strong influence of El Niño Southern Oscillation on flood variability.
3. We used a #varved sediment core from offshore the Nile mouth to reconstruct past #Nile floods during the #GreenSahara -> we observe much stronger #floods AND a higher variability of floods @varveswg
Map showing rainfall anomalies globally for simulations of the AWI-ESM model with conditions 9,000 yr ago, during the North African Humid Period: increase in rainfall in the African Monsoon region.
2. Wetter intervals of the geological past (e.g., North African Humid Periods or #GreenSahara phases) are useful (partial) #analogues
Map showing anomalies of rainfall globally for a mid-level warming scenario (CMIP6 simulations of SSP3-7.0 "Taking the rocky road"): increase in rainfall in monsoon and sub-tropical regions
1. 2. #Warmer climates will lead to enhanced #rainfall in the African #monsoon region

NEW: Ryanair is Europe’s top polluting airline for a third year in a row.
While legacy airlines are still responsible for the biggest chunk of aviation emissions, budget carriers are polluting more than ever.
