An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.

Mantle upwelling at Afar triple junction shaped by overriding plate dynamics - Nature Geoscience The mantle upwelling beneath the Afar rift may be influenced by tectonic processes in the overriding lithospheric plates that shape the distribution of both the compositional heterogeneities and abund...

New paper alert🚨

In this new article in @natgeosci.nature.com we use a multidisciplinary approach (geochemistry, geophysics and mathematically modelling) to see pulsing in the mantle plume beneath Afar and how the flow varies along the rift See the 🧵 below:

Car tyres shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment – urgent action is needed Tiny flakes of plastic, generated by the wear and tear of normal driving, eventually accumulate in the soil, in rivers and lakes, and even in our food.

Every year, billions of vehicles worldwide shed an estimated 6 million tonnes of tire fragments. These tiny flakes of plastic, generated by normal driving, account for 28% of microplastics entering the environment globally.

Heavy vehicles eg SUVs/EVs especially.

Mauna Loa Observatory’s Lease May End Because of NOAA Cuts NOAA, the nation’s leading climate science agency, may lose dozens of offices, including one that is key to the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.

Shutting down Mauna Loa CO₂ observations while atmospheric CO₂ keeps skyrocketing is like turning off a fire alarm because you don’t like the noise

Trump moves to close government lab that tracks planet-warming pollution The lab is connected to the Mauna Loa Observatory, where scientists gather data to produce the Keeling Curve, a chart on the daily status of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.

New: A NOAA lab in Hawaii that is connected to the longest-running observation of global greenhouse gas concentrations is slated for closure in August, according to a list of lease terminations Democratic members of Congress shared with @washingtonpost.com.

One might think that Nazi crimes and palaeontology never overlapped, and yet... Have you ever wondered what happened to tens of palaeontologists & geologists in the Nazi-occupied Poland? How academics helped to bring down the fascist regime. And a curious story of Schindler-equivalent in geology. 🧵

Mighty floods of the Nile River during warmer and wetter climates Sediment cores off the Nile mouth reveal insights into effects and causes of heavy rainfall episodes about 9,000 years ago. That will help to prepare for weather extremes in a changing climate.

8. What’s #next? 1) estimating #FloodMagnitude (volume water) -> hydrological models. 2) Identifying relevant climate modes -> climate models. 3) Elucidating #rainfall dynamics on annual-centennial timescales -> paleo-records & #models (PMIP4 protocols!) #paleoclimates

7. Why is that #important to know? 1) warmer climates will lead to an increase in regional variability design #infrastructure (flood protection). 2) knowing #pacemakers #predicting extreme #floods early-warning systems in #vulnerable regions.

Record of past floods of the Nile during the wetter North African Humid Period (7,500-9,500 yrs ago). Top: thickness of flood layers with green (yellow) thicker (thinner) layers indicating stronger (weaker) floods and the median thickness in black. Intervals of stronger floods also have a larger variability. Bottom: wavelet analysis of the thickness record with strong and significant signals (yellow) showing a strong influence of El Niño Southern Oscillation on flood variability.
