The only privacy risk involved here is one that already existed. It's why asking people before you take pictures of them if it's okay, and listening when they say "no", has always been important.
The feature Google is releasing is image recognition to allow its other systems to pull up photos when you ask -- things like "find me all my photos of Jane" or whatever. It explicitly says that it is not training on user photos, only doing image recognition on them.
Oh fuck I didn't think of that.
So if someone opts in, and has taken photos of friends, relatives, kids, even strangers, they’re “giving permission” on behalf of all those people. So lots of people have no say in this.
The whole “opt in” thing was always a charade but it’s approaching terminal nonsense at this point.
