You donโt need to code switch to thrive with us with TBC logo under the words
Tech by Choice is a nonprofit focused on helping marginalized communities thrive in tech.
Thriving in tech can mean different things. This could be transitioning into a tech role, landing that senior title, or using tech to create your own stream of income.
We would like to welcome @jrewbarrington.bsky.social to
The skyline!
Happy to see youโve made it and started connecting with the community!
Can SkyTech tap in and say hello and share a few accounts to follow!
SkyTech What brought you to the industry, and more importantly what made you stay?
Using CERN data early 90's, building sites for fun mid-90's, running clubs building for the web late 90's - switched to f/t dev '99.
Getting to be around some of the smartest people, building some of the most exciting cutting edge web technology, and constantly learning is what keeps me here.
Wow Ben! Thank you for shearing. We would love to know some of your views on the industry over the years!
Working on cutting edge of the internet & finding a circle of people you can learn from sounds ideal.
we want laand brad housing education clothing justice peace and people's community community control of moden technology
We're a community model after modeled after the Black Panther Party
The Black Panther Party created a 10 point program to highlight its guidelines & ideas on how to be in community.
Their 10th point hit's is where we pick up where they left off โ๐ฟโ๐พโ๐ฝโ๐ผโ๐ปโ

Making something out of nothing is so powerful!
Spite driven development is a valid and surprisingly (or maybe not surprising) common reason people jump into code!
We know youโve been able to build a solid skill set coming from a design!
a uni tutor showed me how to make a website with flash while I was attempting (and failed) a music production degree
years later frustrated that my design work was being badly translated and ignored by web developers, I learned html and css & more flash mostly out of spite but ended up enjoying it
A question we should all be asking during interviews right now is, "Is your company currently profitable?" And "what's the company's strategy for handling the expected market downturn?" ... And on the flipside, employers should be ready to answer those questions, given our economic climate.
We love know youโve been able to live your childhood dreams AND youโre helping others do the same!
This type of support is why weโre excited about the future of the industry
Can we follow up with you about your story in your platform of choice that has DMs?
Thank you Evelyn for sharing the none cookie cutter reason behind why moving in this space has been so impactful for you.
Your story is one of the reasons why weโve started our community. Tech can be a way out of bad situations if ppl can have that ah ha moment where we see our path forward โ๐ฟโ๐พโ๐ฝโ๐ผโ๐ปโ
My dad told me I could make a lot of money and the only thing I ever actively showed any interest in / skill with was computers.
Thought I'd make video games, but business software paid more and was easier to get jobs for.
I stay because it's the only thing I'm qualified to do that pays this well.
We love when you can find a sweet spot where skills and interests meet!
Happy to know youโre here ๐๐ฟ๐๐พ๐๐ฝ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐
Fascinated with how the internet works and all the different types of people and info you come across.
Nobody has made me a housewife yet.
Well now we canโt help with the housewife part, we only built TechBae ๐คฃ https://z3r49.csb.app
We love that curiosity brought you in! Happy to watch your growth as well ๐๐ฟ๐๐พ๐๐ฝ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐
Wanted to build games, haven't build a single game. Women in tech community, being able to make things I like, flexibility to work anywhere is the reason I've stayed. Had a lot of reasons to quit too but I love it too much.
We're so happy you didnโt leave
but we understand why you had the thought. This space isnโt always easy to be in! But community helps a lot.
We have one question ๐ค how can we help you build that game?
Haven't found any other profession that:
* Is as lucrative
* Allows as much autonomy
* Offers the chance to problem solve
* Is focused on craft
* Lets me work with smart people
* Has as low barriers to entry
We're happy to know Tech was your Choice ๐
We bet you have a few good stories from your experiences over the years! Would love to hear them one day!
๐ฑ Career growth keeps us going
๐ฐ Finical stability letโs us focus on the important live moments
๐ค Solving problems keepโs curious minds happy
Weโre happy youโve stayed and are inspiring others along the way โบ๏ธ
Brought me to: it was easier to get a paid software engineering internship than an unpaid polisci one
Kept me: solving problems, financial stability, career progression
