A significant aspect of the impact of hypnosis is subject’s expectations. Expectations, like emotions, are reactionary and transient. Part of what the submissive subject enjoys, even if they don’t fully realize it, is the manipulation of their own expectations.

Sometimes I wonder about the relationship between media and suggestion, especially through language. Did people accept suggestion differently in the age of print? Now, as our attention spans shrinks and we’re surrounded by screens, are people susceptible to different kinds of suggestion?

No one is above the power of suggestion. Even when it seems blatant and heavy-handed, it’s affecting you. The sappy violins pluck at your heartstrings. Ad campaigns drive your spending. You mind is a substrate for ideas, and so you are hypnotized.

You’re always more hypnotized than you entirely realize. It’s part of why memories of trance can be so exhilarating. In retrospect, you can appreciate just how compliant you were made and even leave you a little shocked it even happened to you.
