OpenAI: We’re burning money like the Joker. A miracle needs to happen for us to turn a profit
Microsoft: Please please use our AI systems, we’re teetering on the edge here
Anthropic: I wonder what’ll kill us first: lawsuits, regulations or model collapse
Media and universities: AI is here to stay

Data is beautiful
Do you laugh? Cry? Despair? How can the future of the world be beholden to this? How?
Seriously, what the fuck is this.
This is completely deranged, and anyone who can’t say so is a coward.
Come work with us, answering interesting questions in new ways
A tweet reading 'big data is a secular inductivist cult with the belief that a critical mass of empirical information leads to a theoretical chain reaction'
I always loved this quote by Jan de Leeuw (from the before times over yonder)
Hivemind, what online data collection platforms would support both multi-player experiments + low-latency, high-precision timing for RTs? 🧠🧑💻
This task, the VSTM, is quite nice, and in our modeling behaved rather nicely psychometrically pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
that is so wildly different from what I do :D. I reckon the current method measures multiple skills (and therefore the colour memory a bit more noisily).
I love this, but I wonder whether the process is the best. For me, the frantic color picking, and the exposure to all the colours in between, disrupts the memory itself. A longer pause and a multiple choice would be better (I think)
Working in modern academia means spending 75% of your time being lectured by admins about not following minutia details of 100+ page handbooks (often now LLM-written) and making endless formatting tweaks to documents you need approved for the work you’re supposed to spend 100% of your time doing.
How could humans make a similar mistake? This seems far more severe than just a correction, it's essentially making up resources to (likely) make a paper more plausible/sensible. Far more in the 'making up data' genre than the 'oopsie formatting mistake' genre (for me)
I am so proud of the team that made the @brainhelpdesk.bsky.social and that continues to work very hard to answer all these fun #brain #questions!
Very cool to be at yesterday's update on the DYNAMIC project working to develop the first human focused 14 tesla scanner. Some amazing technology, astounding numbers (490 *kilometers* of coil wire) and a real sense of pushing the frontiers of our knowledge. www.ru.nl/en/donders-i...
Very interesting new paper led by Arjen Alink & @helenblank.bsky.social
“I shall send off the manuscript today or Monday. It is an extremely poor affair; I must say something & have nothing worth saying. Lock it up carefully, I hate it to that extent it would break my heart to write it again.”
Charles Darwin captures the joy of academia in a letter to his daughter, 1871
Exciting news! The @yorkpsychology.bsky.social are recruiting 3 new ART (research and teaching) lecturers! One role will be prioritised for cognitive, affective and/or social neuroscience.

that is gorgeous, do you have shareable code?
A quote by Fodor saying 'There is already a big revisionist literature about what's wrong with cognitive science, devoted to throwing out, along with the baby: the bath, the bath towel, the bathtub, the bathroom, many innocent bystanders, and large sections of Lower Manhattan.'
Can't go wrong with Jerry Fodor either
We believe visual neuroscience is undergoing a paradigm shift — and the Beyond Binding exchange in @TrendsCogSci makes it visible. Five papers, excellent critics, and a discussion that sharpened and nuanced our argument. Thread 👇
I'll take it
It's publication day for ORIGINAL SIN! On Substack, I wrote about my pub day jitters, and what my 3-year-old has to teach me about making art:

An email sign off with 'egg' and 'magma' due to autocorrect
I usually sign my (dutch) emails with 'mvg' ('met vriendelijke groet'/with kindest regards). Autocorrect offers a range of colourful alternatives...
And this editorial by Sandra Brown, @lucinauddin.bsky.social and team onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
"AI detectors" are themselves AI, and yet are endlessly trusted by people on here if they say that a newspaper article is AI.
AI detectors are snake oil. None of them reliably works. And UK broadsheet are not yet using AI to write articles. No, that link to the deal you found doesn't prove it.
