I think the standard usage might hit a little too close to home for some of them so I’m unsurprised they’re trying out a new meaning
Then again Massachusetts completely abolished rent control in the 90s wholesale so I suppose it really depends on your vantage point
I don’t know of the top of my head but a cursory Google suggests that it was ~150k between 1994 and 2016, which is substantial
Still, “almost half of all rental apartments in New York City are rent stabilized.”

Yes, that is the caveat I am referring to
I think a fairer critique is that deregulatory amount was never indexed to inflation—but like we’ve had a very similar policy in action protecting many tenants, and that’s not even getting into Good Cause reforms recently enacted
NYC’s rent stabilization framework applied to every building with more than six units since 1974, with the caveat that through 2019 deregulation was allowed if rents rose past a certain figure deemed where protection was deemed less necessary
Trump realized that second home tax would apply to him even though he moved to Florida
I think it bodes well that Mamdani is sweating the details here to “pay for” his rent freeze

I think the idea is those ones are at least paying income taxes
Seems like this is what she sent you lol
JD is a man who used to write in the NYT about how he admired President Obama and now tries to ride pogroms and hate to power; he knows exactly what he is doing, more so than anyone in the Trump admin
The way I think about it is that he probably deserves more time in purgatory, because even though Musk and Trump are morons increasing the suffering of millions of people, JD is more clearly consciously choosing to be on the side of evil for personal power
Just passed a guy drinking iced coffee out of an open mason jar on the streets of LIC; New York is back
tbf, if it weren't for Christie kamikazi-ing him in that one debate I think he might have
Ideally we could learn from their example
Berlusconi’s Italy is probably a good proxy here also—it’s annoying insofar as Italian liberals never really got full justice for his corruption & maladministration, politics just kinda moved on
(I know the eds and meds economy has fully supplanted the steel industry in Pittsburgh itself)
Tbf I would expect the PA Democrats to be among the worst here just for the Pittsburgh nostalgia
And some say they aren’t British
Are we sure Philip Hamburger is real lol
I take the point that China just needs to become richer than Portugal on a per capita GDP basis to fully surpass the United States, so it makes sense to tread more carefully
I think @mattyglesias.bsky.social makes a fair point here, although I think he is also more skeptical of whether political liberalization will ultimately and/or necessarily follow further economic growth in China
open.substack.com/pub/matthewy...
I think the stronger case against this speech is that the internet hasn’t necessarily been a force for liberalization, rather than considering proponents of economic liberalization naive for thinking that political liberalization would eventually follow
Tfw the spooky mind control magic in the iPhone is going to be its price
Jim Crow was a far better tool for enriching a southern elite than it was for allowing poor white people any share of government power
Do you personally think he is right?
Ground invasion
I’m not sure it necessarily will; the Dems now have an easier pivot to global trade to lower prices. They can just turn off the tariffs / trade wars and prices will just go down
