I didn't make it very far before I had to put it down. The common Japanese words and honorifics really bugged me, and the then the characters were just too saccharine for my taste. But its reputation was working against it, I don't know if I would have been as critical otherwise

okay, last thought on this: Project Hail Mary feels like it was researched entirely using an askreddit thread called like "hey scientists, what are some surprising facts you think people should know?" and then all the replies start with, "Not a scientist, but..."

it feels like a PSA about the scientific method? I feel like I must be missing something

for all its effort to demonstrate that the character can do science, it kind of shoots itself in the foot imo. I can buy an amateur scientist stumbling into an important discovery, but as soon as it walks you through the math/science, i'm like... "top scientists didn't think of this? really?"
