Long-term studies are vital to understanding how species and ecosystems are responding to climate change and other environmental stressors, but difficult to sustain under typical short-term grant cycles. LTER has been funding these since 1980.
This is breaking something that can’t be replaced.
What will happen to the 82 USFS experimental forests around the country? Many sites have decades-long experiments that are tracking how forests are changed by timber harvesting practices and climate change. As I say here, “you can't just pick up an experimental forest site and move it to SLC.”
The U.S. Forest Service is closing 57 of its 77 research facilities in 31 states under a reorganization plan announced this week, threatening science that looked at how wildfires, drought, pests and global warming are putting pressure on forests.

In einer E-Mail an einen Berliner Strafverteidiger, die der SPIEGEL einsehen konnte, schilderte er den »höchstvertraulichen Sachverhalt«. Er habe, schrieb er, in den vergangenen zehn Jahren »leider einen sexuellen Fetisch« entwickelt: Immer wieder habe er auf den Namen seiner Frau Fakeprofile auf sozialen Medien angemeldet, über die Accounts habe er mit Männern gechattet, geflirtet, »bis hin zum Sex-Talk«.
DER SPIEGEL »Ich war das, ich habe das getan«, habe er dann erklärt. So erzählt es Fernandes. Es habe damals einige Sekunden gedauert, bis die Information in ihrem Kopf angekommen sei: »Es war wie bei einer Todesnachricht, ich konnte nicht reden, nicht heulen.« Ulmen sei derweil panisch geworden, habe Angst gehabt, im Gefängnis zu landen.
Hoffe, kein seriöses Medium übernimmt das „Fetisch“-Wording von Ulmen - etwa in Hoffnung auf mehr Klicks. Es geht um den Vorwurf der jahrelangen (!) systematisch betriebenen (!) psychischen & digitalen Gewalt (!) inkl. Versuch der kompletten beruflichen Diskreditierung (!). Verniedlicht das nicht!

After two weeks of #COP30 negotiations, countries agreed to BEGIN DISCUSSIONS on fossil fuel phase out. And as the article says, "they achieved this incremental progress only in the teeth of implacable opposition from oil-producing countries."
THIS is the problem with requiring unanimous decisions.
