Indicting political opponents & critics because they are political opponents & critics is terrifying.

It's completely inconsistent with the rule of law & democracy.

It should scare everyone - and (hopefully) will get people to realize that we all need to stand against this.

@corewellhealth.bsky.social has seriously restricted access to evidence based, essential, gender affirming health care for young people and their families. They’ve made a choice to put their patients directly in harms way and force their hard working clinicians to comply with an autocrat.

Stephen Miller and Homan’s goal is to shock and awe blue cities to terrify whole communities. They’ll deliberately targeting businesses, schools, hospitals churches and other places of worship. They want Americans to be afraid. Mayors and governors must stand up to them. Lawyers get on standby.

Despite the bitter end, I’m proud of the work we did this session and am immeasurably grateful to our allies both in and out of #mileg who fought to deliver some crucial, long-overdue victories that helped secure safety, bodily autonomy, and dignity for all Michiganders.

The outcome of the MI House’s final week of lame duck really stings and at the @acluofmichigan.bsky.social, we’re left reflecting on the gap between what could have been and what was delivered. Full statement linked. #mileg

Passing our #wateraffordability legislation not only is the moral thing to do for Michigan families struggling to pay their bills.

It's also the smart thing to do to protect our public health.

It's the prudent thing to do for the stability of our cities and townships' water providers. #mileg

‘Civil rights firewall’: Advocates urge Michigan Dems to pass voting rights laws Voting rights advocates are calling on Michigan lawmakers to pass the Voting Rights Act—which would formally codify protections against voting discrimination into state law.

MI Voting Rights Act creates a civil rights firewall, protecting our state from imminent attacks on democracy. Tell MI lawmakers to pass the MVRA. #mileg #MVRA #InclusiveDemocracy #FairVoting

We applaud the Michigan Senate for passing Senate Bills 669 and 670, which expand the application of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and increase transparency within our state government.

Historic vote as FOIA expansion bills clear a critical step to becoming law. On to the full House! December in Michigan is a perfect time for more sunshine! #mileg

.@mkovach217.bsky.social of the ACLU of Michigan is here to emphasize the ACLU's support for these bills. Exempting some officials from a law that's meant to foster accountability at all levels of government creates a culture where lawmakers act without any expectation of oversight.

SB 1082 takes important, targeted steps to address the threat of data to reproductive rights in Michigan. In an age when reproductive rights are under attack and when data can be — and is — used to facilitate those attacks, SB 1082 provides crucial, timely protections.

Those prosecutions rely in significant part on the wide swath of data that we generate every day, which may reveal our repro healthcare decisions. Data collected by period trackers, fitness apps, or brick-and-mortar retailers may reveal or provide a means of predicting someone’s pregnancy status.

13 states have enacted total bans on abortion and eight have pre-viability bans. 2 others have attempted to curtail other rights, including the ability for medical professionals to make out-of-state referrals, for individuals to travel out of state, or for educators to teach about repro healthcare.

The fall of Roe has had devastating impacts as states across the country ban and criminalize abortion. States like Michigan that protect access to abortion play an essential role in providing care to people from states that criminalize care and jeopardize access to needed health care services.

Thank you @mallorymcmorrow.bsky.social, for championing SB 1082 and to the MI Senate for passing it today. This is essential legislation to protect Michiganders’ personal reproductive health information from being collected and shared without their permission or knowledge. #mileg

Equitable voting rights protections, like those in the federal VRA and state-level voting rights acts, have had powerful effects in making the democratic process fairer, more equal, and more inclusive.

By enacting the MIVRA, Michigan can cement its emerging national leadership as a pro-voter state and help combat a newly rising tide of voter suppression efforts. #mileg

MI has been fortunate to have not succumbed greatly to these attacks. But we have faced, and continue to face, attacks to our right to vote from anti-democracy actors. It is imperative that while we can, we take the opportunity to give voters this layer of protection.

1 year ago 2 0 1 0

The MIVRA would be one of the most comprehensive state voting rights acts in the nation. Its passage is more important than ever as the federal VRA has come under assault. In recent years, states have swiftly implemented new voting restrictions at levels unseen since Jim Crow.

The MIVRA will reinforce our recent progress toward becoming a national leader on voting rights and inclusive democracy. It places Michigan at the forefront of a national movement and will strengthen democracy for everyone in our state. #mileg
