Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc.

If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

the sad reality: your favorite local haunts (that indie bookstore with the queer book club, the game shop that hosts tcg nights, the cafe with local art shows, etc) are always teetering on the edge of closure every single month. just a reminder to show these places love whenever you can.

A lot of accusations that writers use ai because of how they write are personal preferences at best and ignorance at worst. Ai was fed on our writing. You can find mountains of writing pre-ai that feature em dashes and purple prose. They are still used by many writers.

I’ve had my own work scrapped. I get how infuriating it is. But seeing writers being accused of using ai for reasons that have potential innocent explanations is contributing to the harm.

For every claim that a writing style = ai, you hurt a real writer who writes that way.

Recognising this context is important to avoid incorrectly accusing a writer or writing off whole parts of language as gen ai because ai tries to replicate what it has been fed on. That writer is more likely to be a victim of having their work stolen and scrapped than use ai.

Are there other explanations to explain a similarity? Are common language or literary features of that genre present? Is it recognising papers on a similar topic, necessary keywords and phrases? For ai checkers, is it actually recognising ai or the scrapped work fed into it?

It reminds me of the plagiarism software students are encouraged to use for our papers. Things that can flag as a “likeness” are common scientific and mathematical formula, literary devices, structured essay language, even correctly cited sources.

In everything, context matters.

This is why I don’t believe ai checkers are accurate. If ai has been fed on stolen fanfics, academic papers, fiction, etc, of course a checker will falsely flag someone’s writing as “ai.” Because it’s recognising common knowledge, language and a likeness to literature it scrapped.
