For example from Gentile v. State Bar Nevada, 501 U.S. 1030, (1991)

The very fact of litigation can have chilling effects: it's expensive, exhausting, and harrowing to have to defend yourself against a public official even if the merits are virtually certain to go your way. Carrying the promise of Sullivan forward requires a robust federal anti-SLAPP law.
for sure, congratulations to magyar. but the real heroes imo are those in civil society & journalism & rank-and-file opposition & academia who have fought against the disintegration of rule of law, the weaponization of the courts/media, & so much more for so long. 🇭🇺
Thanks for sharing!

A Colorado town pulled advertising from a local newspaper in retaliation for reporting it disliked. After an @rcfp.org attorney representing the newspaper pushed back, the town reversed course.

OMG!
Congratulations to Martha Minow who was awarded the 2025 Friedrich Schiedel Prize for Social Sciences and Technology from the Technical University of Munich. She is recognized for her exceptional work in law, social sciences, and tech, specifically in artificial intelligence.
I continue to be gobsmacked at 1) how common this formulation is 2) how antisemitic and generally bigoted it is 3) and how for all the talk of anti-semitism this is never cited as an example even though it’s quite literally the original incarnation.
ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. She’s married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.
They’ve already sent her to Louisiana.

"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness and let other people clean up the mess they had made" is what comes to mind here.
I love it when a plan comes together.
Dear New York Times and Athletic. Thank you very much.
Who's the Nationals' No. 1 catcher entering spring training? They're purposely keeping the answer to that question open-ended for now.

From new technology both sophisticated and rudimentary to new warm-up routines to the rookie manager throwing BP, the Nationals' first pitchers and catchers workout today had some notable differences from previous springs.

BREAKING: The number of appearances of Obama and Biden in the Epstein files is STAGGERING. That staggering number is ZERO.

Brilliant piece.
Damn right!
In which @sallyjenx.bsky.social so beautifully captures want makes a great newsroom truly great.
Here’s to all of the wildly dedicated people who—no matter the hour, the destination, or the danger—grab a notebook and run toward the action no matter what.

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.
Democracy dies in oligarchy.
NEW: A eulogy for The Post's sports department, which transformed the press box forever and created some of the best sportswriters in America

Important reporting here from @charliesavage.bsky.social ⬇️
The layoffs at the Washington Post really suck. I don't know how else to put it. That newspaper is great. The sports section is awesome and I have enjoyed reading so many of the people who work and worked there. WaPo does essential work. All the journalists there deserve better.
Good opportunity for MacKenzie Scott to get a lot of great press for a reasonable price…
… Povich, Solomon, Shapiro, Denlinger, Remnick, Wilbon, Kornheiser, Clarke, Reid, Goff, Rosenberg, Hamilton, Berko, Nichols, Friend, Bos, Sally, Babb, Brew, Maese, Frey, Maske, Buckner, Culpepper, Wise, Les, Sheinin, Feinstein and so many others that made it so unique and essential.
"We’re witnessing a murder," writes @ashleyrparker.bsky.social. "Jeff Bezos ... and Will Lewis, the publisher he appointed at the end of 2023, are embarking on the latest step of their plan to kill everything that makes the paper special." www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
Bezos has been tearing down what was once one of the most reputable papers in the world for years now, but I chose to keep my sub to read and support the people providing great sports coverage.
Welp.
