The very fact of litigation can have chilling effects: it's expensive, exhausting, and harrowing to have to defend yourself against a public official even if the merits are virtually certain to go your way. Carrying the promise of Sullivan forward requires a robust federal anti-SLAPP law.

for sure, congratulations to magyar. but the real heroes imo are those in civil society & journalism & rank-and-file opposition & academia who have fought against the disintegration of rule of law, the weaponization of the courts/media, & so much more for so long. 🇭🇺

I continue to be gobsmacked at 1) how common this formulation is 2) how antisemitic and generally bigoted it is 3) and how for all the talk of anti-semitism this is never cited as an example even though it’s quite literally the original incarnation.

"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness and let other people clean up the mess they had made" is what comes to mind here.

Catching question at the forefront this spring The Nationals have six weeks to decide if a healthy Keibert Ruiz will retain his No. 1 job behind the plate, or if 23-year-old Harry Ford is ready for the assignment

Who's the Nationals' No. 1 catcher entering spring training? They're purposely keeping the answer to that question open-ended for now.

You Can’t Kill Swagger My old corner of The Washington Post raised some of the best journalists in the business.

In which @sallyjenx.bsky.social so beautifully captures want makes a great newsroom truly great.

Here’s to all of the wildly dedicated people who—no matter the hour, the destination, or the danger—grab a notebook and run toward the action no matter what.

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.

Democracy dies in oligarchy.

The layoffs at the Washington Post really suck. I don't know how else to put it. That newspaper is great. The sports section is awesome and I have enjoyed reading so many of the people who work and worked there. WaPo does essential work. All the journalists there deserve better.

The Murder of The Washington Post Today’s layoffs are the latest attempt to kill what makes the paper special.

"We’re witnessing a murder," writes @ashleyrparker.bsky.social. "Jeff Bezos ... and Will Lewis, the publisher he appointed at the end of 2023, are embarking on the latest step of their plan to kill everything that makes the paper special." www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Bezos has been tearing down what was once one of the most reputable papers in the world for years now, but I chose to keep my sub to read and support the people providing great sports coverage.

Welp.
