"concern about being qualified... was not the main barrier to [non-Māori librarians' willingness to engage with Māori issues]... much of the time, the knowledge required was at the level of attempting a basic reference desk request or consulting an online dictionary."

Wait, they’re not actually landing? Can you imagine training for going to the moon your whole life then not getting to actually go on it? Seems mean. I reckon they should just do it.

A set of screenshots from DEEP SPACE NINE. An old Klingon throws his arms around Dax and shouts "Curzon, my beloved old friend!"

Dax returns the hug and says "I'm Jadzia now."

The Klingon grabs her shoulders, smiles, and says "Jadzia, my beloved old friend!"

Star Trek figured this out thirty years ago. It's not hard. Even an old, drunk Klingon got it.

My sister used to work for a dance venue. A visiting artist used Chatroulette in his work and seemingly the manager didn’t realise what is was and hence didn’t put out a warning before a performance and it all ended up exactly how you’d think.

There’s a youtube video of some guy singing this song to randoms on Chatroulette and it’s fabulous

This only came to light when the person at the publishing company copied in me and the other coauthor and then we saw that they had been trying to email our colleague for 2 months. I was wondering what had happened as the paper was accepted a while back.

A coauthor based in Saudi Arabia is having trouble receiving emails from a publisher and isn't able to access links to the page proofs. She's the corresponding author so it's not optimal. The messages aren't going to her junk mail and don't seem to be bouncing back either but it's the correct email

Arrrgh just back from supermarket and forgot to get dishwasher thingies. Flashback to last time this happened... Do NOT put washing up liquid in a dishwasher. The resulting bubble monster is funny for about 10 seconds but then you're just stuck with a bunch of bubbles and an unhappy dishwasher.

I’m not feeling sad or particularly self conscious about this. It is really interesting how we all think in different ways. I seem to ‘get’ context most of the time but then every now and then just go into ‘literal mode’ with amusing or cringey consequences.

Also, if it had to be one way or the other. Where you have to either literally interpret something OR figure out what they actually meant… the former would be better, right? I also wonder if this is culturally and linguistically dependent. I did say I was overthinking this!

Overthinking an otherwise inconsequential social interaction where I accidentally interpreted something literally and then felt embarrassed…. Are there people who accidentally interpret things too figuratively and then get teased for that?

A dimly lit medieval stone chamber with arched ceilings and barred windows. Sunlight filters through the upper window, casting a glow on the rugged stone walls and scattered debris on the floor. The atmosphere is eerie and mysterious, evoking the feel of an ancient ruin with a storied past. Goblin Ha’—a hidden chamber tied to one of Scotland’s best legends. In the 13th century, Hugo de Giffard, the ‘Wizard of Yester,’ supposedly summoned goblins to build it. Magic or myth, it’s been standing for centuries, and that’s spooky enough on its own #legends #folk #wizard

Our (@mahliann.bsky.social, @marcuscarter.com, and I) book GAME STUDIES: A CRITICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE FIELD is officially OUT everywhere in the world except the US for some reason. So here is an actual thread about why we wrote it and what we were trying to achieve with it.

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books - Index on Censorship A school librarian faced a disciplinary hearing and scores of books were removed from her school library after she stocked Laura Bates’ Men Who Hate Women

Huge escalation for UK school library censorship. Nearly 200 books targeted in one school, with the excuse of “safeguarding”. A librarian has lost her job & can never work in schools again.

The fate of the books remains to be seen.

Check out this cool bug I saw yesterday. I guess it is a sort of stick insect. As this is Australia I assume it is in some way poisonous even though it looks quite cute.
