Cave allegory with the flame labeled corpus of existing text/images, the guy holding the puppet labeled data taggers, moderators, guys straight up pretending to be a chat bot etc, the puppet labeled statistical model of what elements most likely appear togetehr in comprehensible image/text and the guy on the other side of the wall labeled academics who should know better saying wow cool cognition

Easy way to explain it

“Love it or hate it it’s here to stay” is a crazy thing to keep saying about a technology. If people don’t like using something it doesn’t have to stay we’re not talking about bad weather here

Page from BRAINS

First Panel: "An AI has no sense of anything. No context. No experience." Illustration of a little pink frog (he's playing a blood cell in this comic, though, which is why he's pink)

Second panel: "It cannot touch" the pink frog bends down to pick a flower

Third panel: "It cannot smell" 'sniff sniff' the frog smells the flower

Fourth panel: "It cannot breathe" (the frog is now dark blue with bright pink lungs visible, as though the frog has been imaged in some way)

Fifth panel: "It cannot think" (the frogs brain is now visible, similarly to the lungs in the previous panel)

Sixth panel: "It cannot be" the frog is floating and his cute lil butt is visible

Seventh panel: "*Stares directly at camera*" the pink frog stares directly at camera

Eight panel: "It cannot be... YOU"

I think most artists hit a point where they’re like, well if I can’t be the best artist, I shall be the most ME artist.

Ideal conditions for starting your passion project will never come. You will never feel skilled enough to make it. There will never be a moment where you stop being scared to start. Do it anyway. Do it badly. Do it scared. Just make that thing that’s clawing at the door of your soul; It wants out.

Reminder that "not acting" shapes the future as much as "acting" does and that not choosing is a choice.

Photo of a yellow glittery sticker with some kind of rodent that resembles a hamster. It looks like it is in distress, standing up and sweating. There is a red cowboy hat on the head. Text around the animal reads "Hold on pardner, I'm overstimulated" There is slight chromatic aberration effect on the sides, really hitting the sentence home

I'm not being the most eloquent about my thoughts, but bottom line is, adult themes shouldn't be censored just because they make some people uncomfortable. Simply look the other way. Simply do not consume media you don't want to see. That's it. Have a nice day.

i bring a real "stop saying this is impossible/a problem only solved by tech when you mean institutionally we've committed to under-resourcing human expertise" to a lot of meetings that people are forced to begrudgingly agree with before moving on as if i said nothing

every time someone says “I asked ChatGPT” I hear “I asked the hallucinating machine of confident lies” and idk it just doesn’t engender a sense of trust you know

I LOVE the idea of assigning zines. I think one of the other major challenges of, well, education in general, is creating space for all different learning and thinking styles. Zines can do that really well.

also the speed at which i was convinced to buy a game that was described as “maps” and “places/communities changing over time” is maybe slightly concerning…
(and it is SO pretty and physically laid out like an ordnance survey map!! like who am i to overlook that)

Same with making art—you learn a new thing BY doing a new thing!

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Art emerges in the dialogue between artist and medium. Learning the discipline of working within the medium's constraints, and developing approaches and techniques that shine within them, is what polishes and exalts the art.

This is why AI "art" of all kinds isn't really art.

I mean this so honestly, but you absolutely should be making the most "Mediocre Shit" and be proud of that

Low brow, high brow?! Whatever! Art can and should exist purely for the sake of creativity. real freedom and diversity within art is all about CREATING outside of perceived "artistic" value
