Media news: The @chicagotribune.com next managing editor will be Stacy St. Clair, a widely respected journalist and hands-on leader who listens and pushes and nurtures. I love ragging on editors but we have a great team of leaders here and I am excited to see what the future holds.

That's twice today I've seen the "transnational criminal organization" label in court actions the Trump admin & its allies are pursuing.
The first: a DOJ presser announcing charges against alleged anti-ICE activist Kyle Wagner in MN.
The DOJ says that case is part of "Operation Take Back America."
In a social media post, the Republican student group at the University of Illinois endorsed Homeland Security executing people who support immigrants. “Only traitors help invaders,” said the young Republican fascists.
Dozens of media outlets across the country condemn the arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort www.thecity.nyc/media-outlet...
My first remarks since being arrested last night.
This post is blowing up, so for all the big name journos sharing it, some context:
This was a rally in Chicago explicitly calling for ICE to be abolished, and for a mass general strike to counter the Trump admin's continous attacks on our communities and civil liberties.
Good afternoon from Daley Plaza in Chicago.
An anti-ICE/CBP rally is coalescing in the plaza, joining similar demonstrations today across the country.
CNN in Minneapolis: We are seeing thousands and thousands of people, we've been standing on the corner here for the past ten minutes. This this crowd has not let up. It's just continuous.
IRE, the nation’s largest journalism association, calls on the federal government to drop these charges and to acknowledge and respect the rights of journalists covering protests across the country.

BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps.
This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people.

Don Lemon’s arrest is a disgraceful attack on the First Amendment. Government arresting a journalist for reporting on public controversies is a five alarm fire for our constitutional rights with endless and enormous consequences.
Journalism organizations condemn the arrests of Don Lemon and Georgia Fort as vindictive attacks on press freedom

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) strongly condemns the arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort for their reporting on a protest in Minnesota, arrests which mark a serious escalation of attacks on the press in the United States.

Georgia Fort, an independent journalist and vice president of the Minnesota NABJ chapter, was also arrested by federal agents this morning
I was sent this video of agents at her door:
2012: The Putin regime arrests members of the musical group Pussy Riot for a protest in a cathedral to highlight ties between the regime and the church.
2026: The Trump regime arrests protesters (and Don Lemon) over a demonstration at a Minnesota church to highlight ties between ICE and the church.
Don was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles.
WASHINGTON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Former CNN anchor Don Lemon has been arrested, a Justice Department official familiar with the situation said on Friday.

Two journalists were arrested today for simply doing their jobs. Journalism is the act of reporting factual information, which requires us to be present when there are protests, events, press conferences etc. Our work is protected by the First Amendment and it's the cornerstone of our democracy.
Here's how to identify some crowd control munitions, canisters of which federal agents have left on the ground after deploying them against people in Minnesota. bit.ly/3YWp1jE

Chicagoans and local leaders say ICE "must be abolished" after the killing of Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti.
Three emergency protests were called across the city Saturday after immigration agents shot and killed Pretti. blockclubchi.co/4jWf9Qm

Homeland Security doesn’t like it when we call ICE and Border Patrol “the Gestapo.”
So let’s set the Gestapo aside. Instead I’ll use this thread to compare Trump’s thugs to other secret police and terror squads from different times and places. It’s tyranny, no matter where it comes from. 1/10🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵
The Washington Post published a clear video of federal agents removing Alex Pretti's handgun moments before he was fatally shot. There's nothing in the video to suggest Pretti even reached for his weapon.

People gather in the Loop to protest after federal immigration officers shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse, in Minneapolis the previous day Sunday in Chicago.
Good afternoon from downtown Chicago, where despite heavy snowfall, thousands have gathered for an anti-ICE/CBP demonstration in solidarity with the Twin Cities. More are still streaming in.
Lt. Illinois Gov. Juliana Stratton just addressed the crowd, and called for ICE to be abolished.
I’m out here in Los Angeles, where hundreds have gathered in response to the ICE execution of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. Chants and speeches underway here outside the Federal Building in DTLA. Working multiple cameras today so posts may be sparse
X reader note says there is no evidence to back up claim by border patrol chief Gregory Bovino that the protester killed by the border patrol intended (in vain) to massacre agents.
This note. Helpful indeed
AOC: "An ICE officer had violently pushed a woman to the ground and he had come over to help get her up and that is what precipitated this incident that very quickly led to an execution in the streets. What we are seeing here is a momentous pivotal moment for the United States."
A doctor on scene where federal agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis: "ICE agents appeared to be counting his bullet wounds."
