🔥 Fire doesn't follow a predictable schedule and neither should your prep.
Conditions this year are a reminder that preparation can't wait.

❄️ California's snowpack is at 10–20%, a new record low.
Snowpack is a slow-release water source. When it's low, moisture disappears faster and vegetation dries out weeks ahead of schedule.
Drier grass ignites faster. Fire moves through it faster.

No, coring a tree doesn’t typically cause any damage to the tree itself. Healthy, mature trees are capable of sealing and healing the core through a process called compartmentation.
Using an increment borer, CAL FIRE forestry professionals extract a small core sample from a tree. Each ring captures a year of growth—offering insight into drought, fire history, and changing conditions.

This level of performance highlights the scale and urgency of firefighting operations—where every second, and every gallon, matters. 3/3
Modern Type I fire engines—designed primarily for structural firefighting—are capable of pumping up to 2,000 gallons of water per minute when connected to a reliable external source, such as a fire hydrant. 2/3
When responding to structure fires, the volume and speed of water delivery are critical to protecting lives and property. 1/3
Last weekend, comedian Pete Davidson—whose father was a New York City firefighter who died in the September 11 attacks—took time ahead of a nearby show to personally thank a CAL FIRE crew for their service.

📞 Every call starts with a voice behind the line.
This week, we’re recognizing the men and women behind the call — CAL FIRE's Communications Operators.
Thank you to the people who answer when California calls. Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
Is your yard working for you... or against you?
As planting season begins, your choices matter more than you think. Smart plant placement, proper spacing, and the right species can significantly reduce your wildfire risk.

We’ve made 13 arson-related arrests in 2026. And we're not done.
CAL FIRE investigators work year-round to track down those responsible for deliberately setting fires and threatening California communities.

For CAL FIRE helitack firefighters, this is mandatory training.
Trainees are strapped into the seat, flipped upside down underwater, and must execute a calm, controlled escape. The process is repeated until the response becomes pure muscle memory.

Training never stops. Not even underwater.
The SWET (Shallow Water Egress Training) chair is a specialized, modular training device originally developed for military aircrews. It simulates a submerged helicopter.

What are you doing to help your home survive wildfire?
Wildfire safety starts at home.
Begin by clearing dead and dying vegetation from your yard. Take the next step by creating and maintaining defensible space and hardening your home.

Fuel breaks also improve access for crews and expand defensible space on a broader scale, extending protection beyond individual properties.
It takes a combination of community hardening, aggressive response, and landscape-scale fuel reduction working together to reduce the threat of wildfire.
Projects such as the Murphy's Fuel Break are vital to Community wildfire resilience, helping slow fire spread, reduce intensity, and giving firefighters a safer, more effective place to engage.
Heavy equipment is a critical part of wildfire response—and so are the people who run it.
CAL FIRE HFEOs construct firelines, support access, and help move resources safely across the state.
Applications are open through April 13, 2026.

Sometimes the way it’s always done isn’t the best way when lives are on the line, argues one of CAL FIRE’s own in this recently published article.

Whether you’re planning a beach bonfire or a campfire in the backcountry, keeping your fire contained is critical.
One less spark can prevent a wildfire.
95 percent of wildfires are human-caused. Take the extra time to practice campfire safety.

This recent quick stop of a Central California wildfire is a reminder that peak fire activity is just around the corner.
Now is the time to prepare by learning your evacuation zone, preparing your 'go bag,' and planning your two ways to leave your neighborhood.

This method allows crews to safely and efficiently treat large or difficult-to-access terrain while maintaining control over #FireBehavior.
Each #PrescribedBurn is carefully planned and carried out by trained personnel, using specialized equipment, control lines, and detailed plans.
Not all fire starts from the ground. A helitorch is an aerial ignition device mounted beneath a helicopter. It releases a controlled amount of ignited fuel to introduce low-intensity fire in targeted areas.
