London's Millennium Dome with collapsed roof and partially abandoned (now the 02 Arena)
Having recently returned from the gloriously futuristic and still pristine City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, I'm reminded of what an absolute shit show London's $1.3 Billion Millennium Dome was.

It's an inevitable mathematical end point of gerrymandering - subverting democracy to override the popular will requires constant revision as one inevitably faces a shrinking base. Forgoing smaller losses until one cannot escape a near total collapse. Spread too thin and you eventually disappear.

I expect would-be social media influencer types will soon start using OpenClaw etc, trained on their own posts, to replicate their online presence in persistent blanket posting and interactions. I worry more about pervasive digital clones than I do about the endless AI slop accounts.

I think there's genuine fatigue with D&D from a lot of players, and with even D&D Beyond looking to emulate MMO subscription based monetization it's hardly surprising. I'd eat my proverbial hat if they ever greenlit a successor to NwN. (Though maybe another RPG would?)

The 'Weeping Eye' NwN logo
NwN 1 embraced multiplayer #DnD homebrew content over subscription based content. Nobody gets charged, everyone can create. As it approaches its 25th Anniversary this game has more online players than both D&D Online and Neverwinter, despite almost zero official promotion.
Invisible. Indomitable.

Though your own project looks great. I definitely think little beats being so original. Recent years in gaming have shown there is a real thirst out there for thoughtfully crafted intelligent titles - big budget retreads are all too frequent.

Of course. We have about 2k regular players, and could likely still function with 3x that, but when it comes to a lot of big MMO projects with millions in investment they are aiming for WoW numbers, and I'm just not sure, in many cases, that it is a realistic objective.

I may be bias but feel the problem also lies with the first of those two letter Ms. Why be 'massive' at all? Many players will get significantly more out of being part of a smaller, more personal experience. Meaningful stories told within a curated setting. Be the next thing, not the next BIG thing.

Lovely German language article here that talks about NwN and some of its servers (Arelith, PotM & TDN), with some very kind words to share (and includes an Arelith screenshot later in article!)

I've known Matheus for a number of years, so this one feels particularly special.
What stands out about this most for me is that outside of commissions to work on existing systems like D&D, Matheus has the most sublime imagination that really shines through here.
It's an inspiring effort.

While I definitely get the hate for alignments in #dnd I remain a fan.
In a game of tables and charts these structures are themselves pleasing to interact with, as is how it ties into the cosmology of the deities and the larger clockwork universe.
...also gives me something to do with a D8

Admittedly I was sold on first seeing the art, but having read through it and played an adventure with Matheus I'm now more excited than ever.
This game feels like a breath of fresh air.

Massive Open World Non-instanced MMORPG 🌏 Arelith #shorts
YouTube video by MarleMMO
I've never really made enough video content for Arelith, outside of some toolset tuition videos (I swear I'll get back to that one day), but over the years players have made, and continue to make a great many.
I'm very grateful to those promoting us this way.

A galleon being loaded at Cordor Docks. Arelith art from Matheus Graef.
A major update to Arelith's sailing system has introduced unlimited instanced vessels.
Ranging from small sloops to large galleons, in the last few days alone well over a dozen new crews have formed to take their vessel out on the grid map surrounding the mainland.

A black robed wizard, embroided with stars, stands on top of a stone peak. Behind him, the vastness of the world. The early morning creeps amidst the ravines, painting the world in coy lilacs and deep purples. A city of horned spires jolts from the stony wastes, illuminated in bright cosmopolitan oranges. An alien zeppelin flares out its floodlights at the rooftops and beyond.
The wizard stares at the viewer, though we do not see within his cloak and hood. Blackness. From the void creeps out two marble-white hands, old as time, covered in rings, gesturing in unknown signs.

Every time I ask a search engine a question nowadays I get an AI answer, presented as objectively true.
Formerly one had to pop down to the local pub for this level of being wrong with utter convicion, so it saves me a walk and a few quid, if nothing else.
Pretty sure Internet used to be better.

The cover of the 3E Player’s Handbook, designed to look like a gem and gold covered tome.
Happy 25th Birthday to D&D 3E!
On August 10th, 2000, the PHB was released, as were character sheets and the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Game boxed set. The DMG was released in September.

Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles (BGTSCC for short) is a persistent, online role-playing world in the game #NeverwinterNights2. Our world is set in the #D&D Forgotten Realms campaign setting, using the second and third edition lore as a canvas.

Two Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay books side by side. The one on the left is 30 years old & dog-eared. The second, at 40 is doing a little better despite a damaged spine.
I think all roleplaying books should have a durability rating.
While others have long been reduced to stacks of crumpled paper, others have held up surprisingly well.
30 and 40 years old respectively.
They might look a little worn, but they are FAR from being defeated. #ttrpg #warhammer

As something of a veteran of the old Amiga titles (Pinball Dreams), anything goes, (until game says it doesn't), but I've never seen a pinball game where tilting is explicitly designed as a solution.
vandalism in RL unless ball stuck, or perfectly balanced. In game physics may allow for that too?

What I perhaps find most chilling in these stories is less the policy originators themselves, but how many people further down the chain are so eager to enforce them; when the opportunity to dehumanise others is presented, it is very often swiftly embraced by those with 'authority' to do so.
