Interesting. I've just retired after 30 years in tech and they befuddle me as much as the OP. I get that they're inherently more secure, but seem to have met about four different implementations to the point that they just annoy me for being so crappy

I've asked the BBC to correct this news report's mistake in claiming 100,000 small boat arrivals last year

Could use BBC Verify data to get numbers right + more accurately report the context:eg, that small boat numbers are falling in 2026

Hah! My Mum used to read that, after I sorted an email account for her so she could message me around the globe fixing Y2K issues. Have you still got the copy? Publish, I dare you!
Exactly how to best monetise it at end-user level.
I dislike it intensely because I think it will addle brains, promote stupid and quite likely enable all sorts of unpleasant crap. But it is supremely useful and I touch it in some way several times a day. Alexa+ anyone?
(I am 59).
But then the commercial heavyweights rolled in in the early noughties, with their walled garden social media sites, carving out profit and constraining users to platforms. And AI is not so different, except its immediate value is less clear to the masses. It will come, once the AI guys divine (5)
Critically, the internet of then was built on RFCs and open-protocols; you could build what you wanted. Until that point the internet was awash with free/shareware to do useful stuff, easily obtained. It was mostly joyous (4)
going to change the world in countless useful ways. But the majority of people weren't using it at home, because the majority didn't have access or a device to access it on. That started changing rapidly from then, so it wasn't just professional geeks like me. It was very much a pull thing (3)
The WWW was functioning with some early adopters, my bank intro'd online banking, Amazon were shipping to the UK if not already operating from it. There was enough to see that the naysayers had started to go quiet and a lot of people were very excited about its obvious utility. Was clearly... (2)
No, they really weren't. The WWW had only existed for 5 years odd at that time (I recall getting hold of NCSA Mosaic when it was first available and showing my family at the time, who refused to accept I had any reason to be excited by it, 'cos there wasn't really much to show them.) But by 1999...
We had exactly that this week. Phenomenal in-your-face example of nature doing its thing...
Will voters EVER understand the big lie about "scary democratic (small D) socialist policies?!" Bernie has told us for decades, and Mamdani is showing us now. We can instantly fund a WAR but have TO DEBATE for decades about healthcare for all - GEEZUS!
They've LIED TO US FOR PROFIT for decades.
Debunking USA lies about contributions to NATO. The only sensible measure is how much do NATO members contribute to military spending per capita ie relative to the size of their population / economy. Guess what?
The US is second.
From the bottom.
Just edging out... Albania

RFK Jr meltdown in House interview because Rep. Sewell brought a visual aid of JFK Jr's own words about "reparenting" black children is a reminder: denial isn't a defense when the receipts are poster-sized. His racism is showing no matter how much you deny that you didn’t say it.

Today’s poem is called ‘Requiem for Whoever’.
It’s one of my more tender, thoughtful poems, as I attempt to gain a small share of the lucrative funeral poetry market.

This is us reproducing the moment when President Trump acted out the role of a doctor helping others.
As you can see I proudly played the leading role.🎭
Just thanked Viktor Orban at the end of the Hungarian Presidency for being our secret weapon and helping us bring down the EU project
Bad night for Nige
What happens when you hand political power to ignorant, uneducated, stupid people overflowing with confidence in their competence. Not even surprised; this is the Trump administration and that's just how it rolls. Revelling in evil.
I've not heard HC talk at length on policy detail before 'cos I'm English. But, gosh, does she know what she's talking about? Such a contrast with the sacks of shit that claim to be governing the USA today.

Iran posted this. What a humiliation for Trump.
