Happy #MicroscopeMonday with a π° liver infected with Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease! RHDV has two virus types of which RHDV2 has spread worldwide through the exchange of pet trade and improperly disinfected equipment. In the name, it causes massive bleeding and tissue death in the π« and liver.
Delayed #MicroscopeMonday ft πΈ π !! Frog tongues have abundant mucous glands that help create that sticky feature for them to acquire their prey! However some species of frogs donβt have tongues at all which includes Xenopus laevis, the African clawed frogs, and other members of the Pipidae family!
Happy #SkullSunday ft the North American Beaver 𦫠(Castor canadensis) in honor of International 𦫠Day passing! Beavers are the largest rodents in NA and nearly wiped out by the fur trade and for land expansion for farming. They are a keystone species critical to habit restoration by their dams!

Happy #SkullSaturday ft a domestic ferret skull in honor of National Ferret Day this past week!! Domestic ferrets (Mustela furo) were domesticated from the European polecat (Mustela putorius) about 2500 years ago! Like their wild counterparts, they are excellent rodent πππΏοΈ and rabbit π hunters!
Today is the inaugural Jane Goodall Day since she passed away last fall coinciding with Ape Awareness Month and her birthday!
She, the late Diane Fossey and Birute Galdikas, will continue to be inspirations in the world of wildlife conservation through their great ape research. π¦π¦§

Happy #MicroscopeMonday ft a cestode! This cestode was found in the small intestine of a bobcat! There are several species of cestodes aka tapeworms that can infect a wide variety of species and some cestode species like Echinococcus sp can have severe zoonotic disease impacts on humans!
In honor of Seal and Sea Lion this past week, happy #SkullSaturday with the California Sea Lion (CSL)! CSL have a total range spanning from Alaska to Mexico with a breeding range isolated to the southern half of California and northern Mexico! This is a female evidenced by lack of sagittal crest!

Happy #SkullSaturday ft the serval (Leptailurus serval) in honor of World Serval Day this past week. This medium sized cat is native to Sub-Saharan Africa and has in the recent years become popular in the exotic pet trade. It is the only member of its particular genus within the Felidae family. πππ

This bobcat was diagnosed with highly pathogenic avian influenza: π§ has lymphohistiocytic encephalitis with neuronal necrosis and π« has interstitial pneumonia with alveolar edema and a thrombus in that vessel in the middle. Classic HPAI in a Felid!
Happy #SkullSunday instead of Saturday as the day got ahead of me with the warthog aka genus Phacochoerus! Most well known is the desert warthog is what many associate with Pumba from Disneyβs The Lion King! You can see the impressive tusks that are actually canine teeth most prominent in males! π

This fungal agent has wiped out large colonies of bats within North America in the last twenty years. It was introduced from Europe by spelunkers in the early 2000s. π¦π¦π¦π¦

Parasites are not uncommon in Wildife and it is important to discern if it is a problem or not. In this case, there does not appear to have been weight loss nor damage to the intestine so they are incidental.
Happy #SkullSaturday with the American alligator π (Alligator mississippiensis)! They are rhe only members of the genus Alligator with the Chinese alligator as its only other which is much smaller! Formerly on the endangered species list, they have bounced back with conservation efforts!
Happy Invasive Species Awareness Week! Remember that you cannot make excuses for domestic cats outside! They are some of the worst invasive species around and you cannot give them a pass because they are cute and cuddly compared to other creatures such as the European Boar or Burmese Pythons! πππ
