#COP29 Green trade wars didn't make the main agenda.

But possibly for the first time, there's space in climate COPs to talk about the "cross border impacts" of trade-related climate measures, such as 🇪🇺 EU CBAM/🇺🇸 IRA.

So who came top of the podium? IMO the locals of Baku who graciously and generously hosted 60k+ people in their hometown. Meanwhile, all those digging their heels in on #fossilfuelphaseout can be relegated.

But like many others, I sincerely hope this really is only a ‘floor’ to work from. Not much in the text gives guarantee of that.

The deal at #COP29 was certainly hard won and was by no means guaranteed. I suppose a deal itself is an ‘impressive’ outcome considering the state of global tensions - even if much of the hard stuff (ahem, #mitigation) was kicked to #Bonn.

This year’s U.N. climate conference was foisted on Azerbaijan with many saying the country didn’t really want to hold the talks to begin with.

And despite doing its absolute best to put on a show, the outcome of #COP29 seems to have matched that same hopeful but ultimately hollow intent.

And the few ‘protests’ that did take place felt confined and oddly curated compared to previous COPs.

Over the two weeks, I saw negotiators collapse from exhaustion and volunteers protest the working conditions.

Many delegates couldn’t afford the venue’s food and were negotiating late into the night on empty stomachs.

There’s something fitting about the fact #COP29 was held in #Baku ‘Olympic’ Stadium.

The stadium is in name only. Azerbaijan has never hosted the Olympics, but built the stadium in the hope one day it would.

Instead Baku got COP29 - a whole other kind of marathon.

Pleased to see the Feline Delegation finally showed up. Looks like they’re willing to be flexible. #COP29

Bluesky, meet Ruel, my pal leading the PNG delegation. Ruel and I met at COP26 while I was staffing the late Minister Mori, a real climate titan for SIDS who caused a stir in Glasgow. Tired eyes but my Invisalign still gleaming. #TrillionsNotBillions
