right! I always wonder how complex a civilisation could have got while leaving no trace in the fossil record. certainly a lot of technologies would probably have left a mark, but what about social organisation? is it that farfetched to imagine talking raptors? much to ponder

a flashback to the first short story I ever wrote... seven years ago, I think? can't decide if that sounds like a lot or not. anyway. I still like it a lot.

I think your version is more true, but I also think that both depend on both the writer and the reader. There are people who resonate more with suffering and people who resonate more with joy (which is not the same thing as being unhappy or happy) and that affects how they approach stories.

a drama in two acts: you know when you go to preorder a book and discover you’ve already preordered it? I just went to cancel my SFWA membership and it was already cancelled

this means I was 5.16x slower than WR in any% but only 4.14x slower in 100%. clearly I'm a completionist at heart.

love to see some alastair reynolds love!! he is criminally underrated imo, at least outside the UK. poseidon’s wake one of my fave SF trilogies. also when I was chair of my university SF society we invited him to give a talk & he was a kind, generous speaker.

ahhh, this brings back memories of the interminable train journey from Ljubljana to Budapest which, if memory serves, went right by the shore of Lake Balaton. I doubt that route still exists…

ok I know it's annoying when someone is like "this book is so good" and then it turns out the book isn't out for like five months but this book is SO GOOD. playful and utterly devastating. if there's justice in the world it will join Story of Your Life in the pantheon of linguistic SF. go! preorder!

Another @filiphdz.bsky.social story!

Also it’s the perfect size for if you’re short on time but want to read something beautiful with an ache of truth, as his work always is.

A beautiful reflection on being an immigrant and whether the things we leave behind can be replaced with new ones in our heart. In the end, something will always be missing.
