No Christmas in Palestine: Decolonising Christmas During Genocide in the Holy Land - 8/8

1 year ago 5 3 1 0
Jesus was a Jewish Palestinian man crucified by the Roman Empire during its occupation of his homeland. Today, that homeland remains occupied, this time by a Zionist regime.

It is our collective duty to fight for the ended of genocide and occupation, and for decolonisation. Not by tokenism or virtue signalling, but by action.

You can do this by:

Reading a book, or watching a movie or documentary about Palestine.

Attending a protest, vigil, rally, or other public demonstration for Palestine. Invite friends and/or family.

Educating loved ones about Palestine, and ways of taking action in their daily lives, such as Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) intiatives.

Donating to a family in Gaza, and sharing their fundraiser.

"This Christmas, while the world decorates trees and sings carols, Bethlehem-the birthplace of Jesus—remains a symbol of a greater tragedy. Under Israeli apartheid, Palestinians endure land theft, oppression, and erasure, their voices silenced while the world looks away and you condescendingly celebrating Jesus’ birth.

How can you honor the birth of Christ, a symbol of hope and liberation, while ignoring the occupation and violence suffocating the people of His land? To celebrate Christmas this year without acknowledging the genocide in Gaza is to strip the holiday of its meaning. It becomes empty, hypocritical, and complicit in the erasure of an entire people.

If Christmas is truly about love, peace, and justice, then it’s time to act accordingly. Be silent no more. Stand with Palestine."

- Sayeid, from Gaza

Jesus’ birthplace in Bethlehem

Nativity scene in rubble, Bethlehem

Some words on this year’s Christmas and Palestine from our dear friend Sayeid, a Palestinian artist in North Gaza.

This year, uphold the true meaning of Christmas

It’s not about trees, presents, or decorations

or shallow consumerism for companies profiting off suffering

or the lights adorning our cities

but hope, and being in solidarity with the oppressed.

For those of us in wealthy and safe countries, we have the privilege of celebrating holidays rooted in Palestinian culture in warmth, joy, and safety; while Palestinian people themselves are being erased as their suffering upholds our comforts.

This Christmas is a time for reflection. If Palestinians aren’t celebrating because the Holy Land is in flames, why are you? In a world ignoring their holocaust while partaking in a Palestinian holiday appropriated into a colonial, capitalist version of itself, how will you center Palestinian voices?

For the second year in a row now in Bethlehem, Palestine, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, Christmas celebrations have been cancelled as Palestinians mourn the genocide in Gaza, and the accelerating colonial takeover of Jerusalem and the West Bank.
“We want life, not death.”, read signs by Palestinian scouts, who marched in silence through Bethlehem streets now devoid of holiday cheer.

While the world celebrates the birth of a revered Jewish Palestinian man, Jesus Christ, his homeland burns. Let’s take a moment to talk about what Christmas is like this year for those in the Holy Land, and how we can spend it by putting their voices first.

Orange, brown and beige background decorated with plant illustrations. At the top there is a logo with a green Spinosaurus encircling an "upside-down" globe. Below the logo a text box reads:

The Decolonisaur is an educational project focusing on stories about history, culture, science, and politics. Topics covered will include human rights, natural and cultural heritage, climate justice, and more. The main goal will be to address how our fights for these causes link to imperialism, colonialism, and capitalism, amplifying decolonial and indigenous perspectives.

This will be to spread wider awareness on the core of social justice issues, not as purely humanitarian causes, but as political ones rooted in oppression. Knowledge is a powerful tool in the fight for equality. As such, this project is meant to help wider efforts toward long-term material change to society, in the quest for abolition and collective liberation.

We need a world that values people and planet over profit. Understanding the colonial contexts of global oppression will help us on the road towards that liberation.
