Champions League 2001: Deportivo La Coruña vs Leeds United As goalkeeper, Nigel Martyn knew what this pre-match bluster meant. "If they think they can score four, Deportivo must have singled me out," he said.

The pressure on Rio Ferdinand was so intense that, after conceding a free-kick, he smashed the ball against the advertising hoardings.

He wasn't protesting against the referee so much as the idea of another seventy minutes of this to come.

...this was also the game when Bellusci took this free-kick away from Lewis Cook

But I'm still in too much of a good mood from Monday to let his patronising little pat on Cook's cheek bring me down now

Rotherham United 2-1 Leeds United: Tactical Hiding It's bad enough dealing with our own head coach. "Tactically," he said. "Tactically, we've got it right today." And lost 2-1 to a team 20th in the table.

The next thing you know Giuseppe Bellusci is flat on his back, his arm upraised, and Marco Silvestri is panicking.

'What was he — what did he just do? Why is he on the floor?'

'It's Bellusci.'

'And why is Silvestri being sent off?'

"Bellusci.'

Manchester United 1-2 Leeds United: United are back Nobody respects their old myths anymore. In West Yorkshire, nobody ever did. We just needed a team to go there and show how we felt about it on their pitch, while their captain was tantrumming on the grass, nothing wounded but his maloriented pride.

A beautifully framed photo by Michael Regan here. We can see Bruno Fernandes from the back, complaint to all and sundry about one thing or another or everything. His left arm is outstretched and above it we can see James Justin, one eyebrow raised, looking at Fernandes like he’s crazy

James Justin’s raised eyebrow here stands for all of us when this twerp starts going off

And that’s why the second #LUFC goal on Monday night was so, so sweet

Being at Old Trafford to see Leeds win in the league was one thing, but getting this goal notification about Dario Del Fabro scoring for Picerno against Cosenza while I was there? If Carlsberg did Monday nights etc etc

As we wait for #LUFC Wembley ticket news, here's FA Cup allocation 1950-style, for a 5th round tie:

To buy tickets for the cup game, you had to turn up in person and pay nine pence to get into a reserve match at Elland Road the week before.

(I'm not trying to give anyone any ideas!)

Lulu, Wembley and the Atom Age: Leeds United's first cup fever, 1950 If the Peacocks of 1950 could overcome Arsenal, they'd reach the FA Cup semi-final. And that could mean, it was reported, another trip to London, if the semi-finals were moved to Wembley.

FA Cup ticket allocation, 1950s style:

#LUFC persisted with a money-spinning scheme of selling cup tickets to supporters on condition they'd first paid nine-pence at the turnstiles to see a reserve game the week before.

Before #LUFC played Cardiff in the 5th round at Elland Road, three Welsh schoolboys waged a 'Battle of the leeks'.

Forming a relay team, they 'made nearly a dozen trips to the centre of the pitch with either a garlanded leek or the flag of Wales'.

Manchester United 2-2 Leeds United: Got a point A key phrase of Angus Kinnear's programme notes, introducing Jesse Marsch last year, said Marsch was coming earlier than planned as part of 'the acceleration of the coaching transition', post-Bielsa. Later than planned, Leeds might have finally made a start.

History, economic power, contemporary events. Those are things Jesse Marsch swore his #LUFC would overcome.

One point at Old Trafford made a point that he, and we, were wasting our time all that time, using the wrong tactics to fight the wrong battles.

David Batty (part one) ⭑ From A-Z since '92 David Batty was surprised by his own emotions when saying goodbye to Howard Wilkinson, the authority figure who had spent much of the last five years berating him for one thing or another. Wilko, respecting Batty's obstinance and admiring his talent, didn't actually want him to go.

"I think my passing has been overlooked," Batty said. "I like to play passing football."

He was less bothered by his image off the field, as a crossword-solver who was reading the Chronicle of the 20th Century.

"No," he said. "I got bored during the 1950s and gave up."

Wilko, respecting Batty's obstinance and admiring his talent, didn't actually want him to go.

Kenny Dalglish, the story went, had never forgotten playing alongside Batty in John Charles' and Bobby Collins' testimonial at Elland Road in 1988, and trusted him to run his midfield the way he wanted.

That was enough to tempt David Batty away from #LUFC

West Ham United 2-2 (2-4p) Leeds United: Forgetting out of time I'm grateful for Leeds United's stoppage time collapse because it turned this match back towards cup football purity and, while it might not have been romantic, it developed an outsized mental dominance that ensures it won't be easily forgotten.

After three hours, all I wanted was for Pascal Struijk to blast his penalty past the 'orrible oik who'd gone in their goal and get the Peacocks to Wembley.

And I got what I wanted in the end, so all was well that ended well.

Ian Harte was irrepressible. Allowing for a flick on, he had a goal and two assists.

Not bad work in a Champions League quarter-final where you've been rated feeble. Elland Road now threw Depor's words back at them, singing, '3-0 to the weakest team'.
