🚨New publication alert! 🚨
We have published a new method for studying steroid hormones in tiny whale samples 🐳🐋
Great news for conservation - now precious samples can be used for multiple analyses 🧬
OPEN ACCESS in @conphysjournal.bsky.social

Thanks for sharing our new publication!
Available OPEN ACCESS 🤩🙌

Congrats to @clareandvik.bsky.social on her first Whale Scientists infographic! Full story: whalescientists.com/a-new-method...
Samples from Norwegian Orca Survey, project MULTIWHALE 🐳
🧪 Whale hormones… from less than a grain of rice
A new method can measure 8 hormones (like stress & pregnancy) from tiny blubber samples, meaning more insight from every biopsy.
🐋 Stranded whales showed higher stress
🇳🇴 ONE sample can now reveal pollution, diet & health
Big step for conservation
We need to make sure that everyone in this picture who wants to continue in marine science can, and will. The ocean needs everyone’s voices.

This “leaky pipeline” effect, with females dropping out of the field as they get older, and positions get more senior, is not uncommon in sciences. But it needs to be addressed. Diversity in a field is an advantage. Building a family should be compatible with a career in marine science.
Despite marine science having proportionally more women than other sciences (39% as opposed to 29% in other sciences), and even a strong female majority at bachelor programmes, women still only represent 13-24% of senior positions.
Happy International Day of Women and Girl’s in Science!
This is one of my favourite pictures, taken almost a year ago (?!!!) at the Orca Symposium in Tarifa. A collection of some of the most kickass, inspiring, wonderful and supportive young female scientists I know 🙌🐳❤️
It didn't make the news in the English language but if you want to machine translate it here is the link to the story in Norwegian:
Final day of Arctic Frontiers #EmergingLeaders #AF2026 #EL2026
Presented at kickoff meeting of #Polhavet (Arctic Ocean) 2050.
Intense week. New people, new information, new impressions and new ways of thinking. Hopefully friends for life. Hopefully success in making the Arctic a better place.
Many commented on the striking absense of many US scientists & professionals who’d normally be present at such a conference. Despite tensions, there was much passion, and hope. And a shared, stubborn love for the Arctic that cuts across disciplines, institutions and borders. Let’s hope it’s enough.
The theme of #Greenland was a common one. Our Emerging Leaders cohort was honoured to be visited by representatives from the Inuit Circumpolar Council, where we learnt about history, culture and protocols.
I haven’t been to many conferences outside of my field (biology), & it can be easy to laser-focus on your own narrow area of research and miss how it all fits into the big picture. This conference covered everything from ecosystems to tourism, infrastructure, economy, law. Addresses by Norwegian PM
Thoughts on the Arctic Frontiers conference, inc. some of the geopolitics 👇 (a 🧵 because I can’t compress it all!)
Arctic Frontiers is the largest Arctic-focused conference in the world: attracting scientists, politicians, policy makers and diplomats. Given geopolitical tensions it was also timely
Day 4 of @arcticfrontiers #EmergingLeaders #AF2026 #EL2026
Worked with a professional videographer to film a 2 minute video to be shown at the conference (in front of important guests inc. prime minister of Norway! I also presented to the group, and took part in the scientific poster session 🐳
Day 3 of Arctic Frontiers #EmergingLeaders #AF2026 #EL2026
(Bit behind on updates as been so busy!)
Woke up in Kabelvåg and trip to Viking museum. Fascinating private tour and talk by the director on the importance of museums. Group work then hurtigruten - little detour to see Trollfjord by night.
Day 2 of @arcticfrontiers #EmergingLeaders #AF2026 #EL2026
We made it to Kabelvåg on Lofoten with mountains and northern lights. The next day was a morning of snow shoeing in the snowy sunrise, and an afternoon of presentations and group work. Rounded off by sauna and polar plunge 🧖♀️
First 24 hours of #EmergingLeaders #AF2026 #El2026
29 early career researchers/professionals + several mentors gathered in Bodø, above the Arctic circle in Norway. Icebreakers, lectures, workshops & museum visits. Together imagining the future of the Arctic. Beautiful scenery day and night. 🌅❄️🌖
Amazing!!! Congrats to Zoe!! What an awesome cake!!!
Congratulations to the newly minted Dr Zoë Morange! 🐳🧪
It was a wonderful defense of a wonderful thesis! You can check out her thesis on the Seasonal and Individual patterns in habitat use of male sperm whales in their arctic foraging grounds here: nva.sikt.no/registration...
Excited to have been named one of the 2026 #EmergingLeaders in the Arctic! #EL2026. Looking forward to discussing the current visions, trends and challenges in the Arctic with other early career professionals. Culminating in Arctic Frontiers #Af2026 in Tromsø arcticfrontiers.com/emerginglead...
Happy New Year! 2025 was a whirlwind. Back to work after maternity leave with daughter #2, and despite childcare challenges great PhD progress was made! Happy to get out on fieldwork with Norwegian Orca Survey too. Stay tuned for (hopefully many) exciting papers coming in 2026!

What a strange & disappointing headline from NRK about the PFAS restriction. Not a celebration that we will protect humans & environment from toxic forever chemicals... but a lament that rain jackets "won't be as waterproof"
www.nrk.no/nordland/reg...
& why were no toxicologists interviewed?!
Thanks #nets2025 for a fantastic conference! Impressive how much science was packed into 2 days (+ early career workshop). Our @biovitenskap.bsky.social group shared results from the tropics to the Arctic, & zooplankton to whales & polar bears! 🐳🐻❄️ w/ @julia-gieb.bsky.social @khuongdinh.bsky.social
An honour to be invited by @miljodirektoratet.no to present our research on pollution (& other stressors) in Norwegian whales! 🐳 Fun to connect with old colleagues & discuss how results can be converted into actual change (e.g. chemical regulations). Research is nothing if nobody hears about it!
hahahah this is so so true 😂
It was great to meet future @biovitenskap.bsky.social students at the @uio.no open day last week! I gathered some beautiful photos and videos from fieldwork with #norwegianorcasurvey to give an impression of how it is to do killer whale fieldwork in Norway!🤩🐳
The V International Symposium on Orcas was the largest EVER gathering of orca researchers! 🌍🐳
I met so many talented & inspiring scientists, and presented research from our Forskingsrådet project MULTIWHALE @biovitenskap.bsky.social @uio.no
Thank you NAMMCO for funding my travel 🙏
