Anna and her family are stateless in Sweden: “My daughters deserve a future” | UNHCR Europe An estimated 4.4 million people around the world are stateless. Being stateless means you have no nationality and are not recognized as a citizen by any country, and therefore often face difficulties accessing basic rights and services. Among them is 29-year-old Anna in Sweden.“It is very difficult to be stateless. As I got older, I felt it even more. I couldn’t travel to neighboring countries. At university, everyone found out that I was stateless, and it felt like I wasn’t included,” she explains.Stateless from birth

“My daughters deserve a future.”

Anna* arrived stateless in Sweden in 2015, hoping for a better life. A decade later, she and her children remain stateless, struggling to access basic rights.
