Gentry's Law: "As an online discussion about the Boston area grows longer, the probability of it devolving into an over simplistic debate about housing affordability approaches one"

"I like to express my uniqueness through my dance"
"Yo, every one else in this room is the same cobweb spinning thing that everyone else is"

Always been my largest issue with the subculture scenes that preach nonconformity yet require some sort of uniform to be accepted, specific dance moves to be performed, etc. Goth, punk, hardcore top the leaderboard from my experience (limited as for instance I never dabbled in things like the klan)

Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment - Wikipedia

If there's one thing I've learned from the Simpsons [1], home distillation is in fact potentially dangerous! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Granted i've never been an academic and thus have never *needed* to publish, but my first thought is "why in the world would a language port of an existing tool be paper-worthy?"

Pointing claude at some existing software and porting to another language is like the opposite of novel.

While I enjoy his Dungeon Crawler Carl series more, and it took a bit longer to get here: @mattdinniman.bsky.social 's Operation Bounce House has achieved "well, I guess I can keep going for one more chapter ..." (rinse, repeat) status.

I suppose this means I need to check out his other work

"But ... the human element!"

Because of course the first thing Abner Doubleday decided was that its as necessary to have fallible judges.

That one was egregious

You missed a phase. Should always be going back through after the AI review loop and reviewing/adjusting.

Pre-AI I'd usually iterate multiple times on the finished product before sending it off to my colleagues. Still no different, and IMO it's valuable to remain the driver of that meta level loop

Perhaps the fact that you got a friend request and not the somerville resident in this discussion is an example of her lack of political savvy ๐Ÿ˜‚(tho I'd not have accepted it, so whatever)

They seem all in on the strategy of doing just enough to โ€œprobablyโ€ make the playoffs. Call it the rich mans version of the rays

That was my hypothesis on why our previous mayor had the role for as long as she wanted, and that while the very vocal Big Ideas crowd would get grumpy the non-vocal majority would keep checking the box.

And then she proceeded to do fuck all during her time here. Masterful gambit.

This. I've been slowly meandering my way to my own personal set of local optima. But every person and every circumstance is different.

I feel like all of this is somehow simultaneously in the inflated expectations, disillusionment, and enlightenment parts of the hype cycle. Which itself is very on brand for AI and an analogue to the points made in the thread.

Tho chemo isn't used nearly as often. So many cancers now have indications of targeted therapies, immunotherapy, etc. It used to be that chemo was the only option.

Few people are aware of how much progress has been made against cancers.

Leukemia is probably the most striking example.

Before the 1970s, most children affected by leukemia would soon die from it.

Now, most children in rich countries survive.
