This is absolutely an issue. Without a doubt universities are going under if they dont get support. They are at times infuriating and yet incredibly important ecosystems for both research and the development of civic minded citizens and thinkers.

I have the biggest tax bill I think I've ever had (for Reasons we were aware of) and paying it still pales in comparison to having gum surgery on Thursday

17/ So the key thing to ask the public isn't "what should we do about <problem X>". It's "what problems do you have"? How do people want their lives to be different? What can city policy and infrastructure actually do to help them?

But when we crave power over life—endless wealth, unassailable safety, immortality—then desire becomes greed. And if knowledge allies itself to that greed, then comes evil. Then the balance of the world is swayed, and ruin weighs heavy in the scale.

How did I miss the Hanna? She might be destructive, but only a Hannah can do it with panache!

I would love to make it to Wilfred but he sounds like he will just blow a few trees down and then get you to make oatmeal.

Of course they lost money, it costs people like $1.25 for them to send a letter from Halifax to Whitehorse. They are a public service, here for everyone’s benefit. They don’t have to turn a profit!

You are allowed to be mad. It's a decision by shallow, useless "leaders" who are uncomfortable without the visible structures of power and control. It's anti-employee.

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

This is why we should fund science. 🧪

The average person doesn’t give a fuck if AI has some niche use where it actually excels if used properly. In fact, that is what a tool is *supposed* to do and none of us will have a problem if it is used like that. What we see is AI fucking up real life in a massive way.

A few days ago I watched Ed Zitron say that CEOs need to stop saying AI will destroy jobs if they don’t want people to throw Molotovs at their houses. I’m sure this is completely coincidental

In the same manifesto, Palantir's owners argued that we need a national military draft, that soft power is over, and that we were too hard on Germany and Japan after World War II. I don't think that company should be allowed to exist anymore.

The email wasnt as unhinged as I thought (for instance it was to a tax department and not the mayor soecifically) but it still took an hour for her to distill her brain scribbles in such a way that I could write it.

I'm glad it's a skill of mine though. Useful.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

I'm pretty sure my Mom has undiagnosed ADHD and something else more pernicious that hasn't ever been identified, like maybe Bipolar 2 that has sort of...made things harder but not impossible for a decade ir more. But no one checked for a uti when she had a delusional break 25 years ago.

That's sweet. I wish I could help more but the unique situation is that I have to watch her flounder most of the time.

3 days ago 1 0 1 0

Oh that's fair. I just happen to agree with the policy my mom is complaining about. The problem is more that she has a level of dementia I can't interfere in yet, but enough this policy is causing her financial harm. If she could handle her life, this wouldnt be an issue.

Guys, my Mom is calling because she wants to dictate some unhinged letter to Olivia Chow to me (so I can type and send it apparently) because her computer isn't working.

As much as I don't want to do it, at least I could tamp down the tone.

One of the things that endlessly fascinates me with creative work is the choices the artist makes. The words a writer chooses, or doesn't choose. The choices an actor makes or, again, doesn't. What details to include in a matte painting. To cut, or not to cut, and why.

I got it fixed in my mind I would figure it out.

I've met people who took to it right away. I had to do a fair amount of fussing to figure out what settings and masks and humidity worked for me.

You can use it with regular water in a pinch. The humidifier has to be rinsed well the next day though.

Good luck! It takes something to get used to but I found the cpap and sleep apnea reddit groups super helpful to find solutions. And the difference it makes is tremendous!

I don't recall any previous transformative technologies that had to be sold to the public so hard. No one in 1999 was going, "Guys. Cell phone? It's coming, whether we like it or not. I think it's important, FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY, to learn about cell phone. So that we're not left behind!!"
