For accountability, my current self imposed deadlines for my fic are:
Finishing the first draft (around 200k): within 2026
Finish the second act (2/3, around 80k): before August

I have a lot of thoughts about mating bonds and this fic is honestly a result of this. It’s mating bond drama from start to finish
In a world with permanent mating bonds, marriages are inherently obsolete from the point of view of human relationship. The only function it could have would be organizing property and inheritance in arranged marriages between people who do not want a mating bond.
Speaking of marriage, I have a plot point in my omegaverse fanfic that could be solved with marriage but I question the function of the institution of marriage in an omegaverse world where permanent bond marks exist. So I’ll probably go with something else.
I have this vague scenario in my mind where songxiao were married but one day they have one ☝️ fight and xingchen packs and leaves in the middle of the night. Years later xuexiao eventually start dating and XY wants to get married and xingchen has to explain to him he technicallyyy never divorced

I don’t really think any of them would prioritize getting married unless it was for legal (or… illegal) reasons, but I DO think Songxiao specifically have a strong “never married but have been calling each other husbands since three months of dating” energy.
