The weather from Cyclone Vaianu has now cleared from our shores. Now eyes turn to the west as showers move up the country. These could be heavy, with thunderstorms and hail, as a series of fronts roll in from the Tasman Sea.

The latest tracking on Cyclone Vaianu has the centre of the storm moving offshore to the east of the North Island.

The centre of Cyclone Vaianu has made landfall near the Maketu Peninsula. It will now cross the North Island before exiting this evening in Hawkes Bay.

11:30am update on Cyclone Vaianu. The centre is east of the Coromandel Peninsula now and moving steadily towards the Bay of Plenty coast. Below are some stats from the event so far.
Kia ora Kurt, you're right that 45KT is not a top end event for Auckland Airport, however it is still unusually windy and there will be parts of the region like Manukau Heads that are windier. This is why we have the Orange Strong Wind Warning out for the city with gusts of 120kph in exposed places.

Strong Wind Watches and Warnings are in force for the entire North Island, including Red Wind Warnings for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua. Great Barrier Island has been downgraded to an Orange Wind Warning.
Heavy Rain Watches and Warnings cover much of the North Island, alongside parts of Marlborough and Nelson City.
The latest Cyclone Vaianu Severe Weather Watches and Warnings have been issued.
Watches and warnings are still in force across the North Island and upper South Island, including Red Wind Warnings.
Note: Eastern Bay of Plenty, Southern Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa are now under Orange Rain Warnings.
Cyclone Vaianu 9:30am Update:
The Rain Radar shows the centre of Cyclone Vaianu spinning to the east of the country as it continues to sink southwards. It now lies about 100km east of Great Barrier Island.

This is what the satellite imagery from 7:30am shows, with the centre of Cyclone Vaianu (marked with a white x) visible to the northeast of the country and moving quickly south towards the Bay of Plenty.
Cyclone Vaianu 7:20am Update
The strongest winds are yet to come as Cyclone Vaianu approaches the country. Areas such as Auckland won't see their strongest winds until this afternoon, as the wind shifts southwesterly behind the cyclone.
