The heart of Fuentes’s message was that young men in the United States have gotten a rotten deal. In his telling, a nation of entitled baby boomers, like those leading the Republican Party, had poisoned American society with bad jobs, unbearable women and a racially diverse population intent on depriving White people of what they’re owed
Maybe the Republican Party can’t deal with its Nick Fuentes problem because this message is more or less the same as theirs so the criticism comes off as disingenuous www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Be ready to be shocked and offended at university, students told.
These fools are about to be absolutely fuckass mad, just infuriated and offended beyond all belie, when they find out that truth does not consist in a proposition corresponding to facts but rather is a disquotational device used for blind ascriptions.

As @adamserwer.bsky.social points out, they’re just using ‘culture’ to refer to people bsky.app/profile/adam...

I’ve been convinced that the very concept of ‘culture’ is extremely disingenuous and is mainly an epistemic problem for eg ‘cultural studies.’ But here’s a good example of how the idea of ‘culture’ can be straightforwardly reactionary and eugenicist.

A significant problem in the US at least is that many voters see voting as an act of self-expression and self-realization rather than an act of civic responsibility.

If you look at math, CS, and molecular bio, it's easy to see how advances could start to depend on proprietary tools that academics can neither build nor fully analyze.
Personal human attention is part of what makes us competitive. But so is ability to explain the production of knowledge. +

Grotesque: In a dispute over a will, two brothers including a retired Alabama state trooper now working at a federal courthouse, appear to have gotten their mother-in-law arrested by ICE.
Using the state to remove disfavored family members is the sort of thing that happens in totalitarian regimes.

I was raised in a Catholic household, CCD, mass every Sunday, and am long-since lapsed. But I know enough to know, and have been around enough Catholics to know, that a lot of Catholics like Vance are not in it for the Catholicism. If the Pope in Rome contradicts their politics, they fight the Pope.

And to be honest I think beef *should* be kind of a luxury item. It's only ever been a staple due to massive subsidies and extremely cruel conditions of production for the animals. It's also relatively unhealthy so maybe not something to subsidize to the extent we do.

How much beef are people eating?? I occasionally buy a pound of 80/20 ground beef at Hannaford or Shaw's for under $6. Not trying to financially shame anyone but if a $6 food item is seriously out of range then I don't think 'beef' is a good explanatory metric.

No reasonable person says that Gorbachev's Soviet Union or Jaruzelski's Poland or Marcos' Philippines were electoral democracies!
And I'm pretty sure that some of the people saying this about Orbán have *very clear* memories of Gorbachev and Jaruzelski.

Johnson is an evangelical so he wouldn't understand, but Catholic 'just war' theory is explicit about *defensive* war as a matter of *last resort*, and even then a sin requiring repentance. No prayers for *aggressors* and God doesn't take sides in war. Read Augustine, Aquinas first, talk later.

I truly didn't see this when I posted earlier but couldn't have asked for a better in-the-wild example:
