Faculty Defect From Texas Publics, Citing Censorship Fed up with the state’s censoring of Plato, Joan of Arc and Romeo and Juliet, humanities professors are leaving Texas public institutions in pursuit of academic freedom.

'Texas A&M philosophy professor Martin Peterson is leaving the university after administrators told him in January that he couldn’t teach Plato’s Symposium in his philosophy class; they said the ancient Greek philosopher’s work violated the system’s restrictions on gender and sexuality content.' 1/3

Currently reading as part of this year’s studies: same substance, different title, different translation, different commentary.

And both purchased from a book store rather than from Amazon.

I’d stop at every one of them.

The Throwaway Planet | Caroline Fraser Three books raise political and moral questions about human consumption—and the value we place on those who clean up the waste.

We need historians because the past is never just the past.

Every policy debate, public conversation, and cultural shift is shaped by what came before. Historians help us understand context, trace change over time, and recognize what’s at stake.

The author says: ā€œI am an artist, and 2022 was the year when I first started to see knock-offs of my work. It was not my work exactly. It was instead a strange facsimile, as if done by a none-too-talented teenager on tranquilisersā€¦ā€

Then just write a short article about it without a direct link to WaPo. Simple.

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

Intent doesn't matter. Sharing the link encourages people to read WaPo's article, thereby increasing the possibility of further spreading of their media reach and further increasing the likelihood of people buying a subscription since (I think) it's the only way to continue reading full articles.

Travel writer Rick Steves says ā€œKnow people before you bomb them.ā€ Too late, but here are a few sources for Iranian/Persian history, religion, culture. I’ve read the ā€œIranian Religionā€ book, which provides a fascinating encounter with the ancient gods Uhura Mazda and Mithra, among others

WaPo isn’t ā€œanyā€ media outlet. It is particularly bad because of its recent history and who owns it.

Then here’s another comparison: you find a coupon for Chick-fil-A and you give it to someone, thereby encouraging them to patronize that business. That is exactly what you’re doing.

Why new claims about the Shroud of Turin’s origins don’t hold up A metagenomic study of this cloth, controversially purported to bear the imprint of the body of Jesus Christ, has little to say about the relic’s origins

ā€œThe presence of banana DNA doesn’t prove the Shroud spent time in Malaysia or the Philippines.ā€

You could probably find a similar story from a news source that hasn’t been corrupted. Also, is it ok to eat at Chick-fil-A and say buying their food doesn’t mean you endorse their anti-LGBT bigotry? That isn’t how boycotts work.

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

There are really good reasons why people dropped their WaPo subscriptions and will have nothing to do with them. By sharing, you are enhancing their media presence, and thereby boosting, in a little way, the reach of Jeff Bezos…unless you’re sharing to point out something wrong with the story.
