Graphical abstract: Satellite tracking of Black Wood Pigeons in the Izu Islands (2022–2025) revealed frequent interisland movements, with flights ranging from 4 to 170 km. Many individuals dispersed among islands after breeding and returned the following spring, indicating partial migratory or nomadic behavior at the archipelagic scale. Habitat selection shifted with movement, with a preference for afforestation areas and Sasa shrubs during breeding, suggesting flexible use of island habitats driven by individual movement decisions.

Displacement-Optimized Tanglegrams for Trees and Networks Abstract. Phylogenetic trees and networks play a central role in biology, bioinformatics, and mathematical biology, and producing clear, informative visual

Daniel Huson introduces displacement-optimized tanglegrams (DO-tanglegrams), a new approach that applies equally to trees and rooted phylogenetic networks, performing better than cophylo on trees and then NN-tanglegram on networks.

Guest Post: Sequencing the “Uncommon Mourningthroat” A fun challenge for birders, once we’ve become familiar with common bird species, is recognizing hybrids.

"The accumulation of evidence from birders, museum scientists, and genetics is steadily increasing our knowledge of hybrid birds, and at a time of growing appreciation for the importance of hybridization to evolution." #ornithology

Map shows migration of Great Knot.
A sudden decline in the species' survival rate highlighted issues in the Yellow Sea. Further research showed that survival issues were similar for other species using the East Aasian-Australasian Flyway.

Climate, ecological dynamics, and the seasonal distribution of birds in mountains Ecological dynamics related to energy use and competition drives the seasonal distribution of birds in mountains across the world.

Birds move up and down mountains seasonally because they’re following resources, not fleeing temperature change, a new #ScienceAdvances study finds. https://scim.ag/4rylAvw

New paper: Most birds use day–night cycles to time activity - but how do Arctic birds cope with nonstop summer light? Male snow buntings keep a daily rhythm year-round, though it weakens during spring migration as flights are scheduled more flexibly
