For those interested, here are photos of the flowers of two of the focal Linum species, displaying floral monomorphism with anthers and stigmas at the same height (left) and distyly (S- and L-morph with reciprocal positioning of styles and anthers in the flower) (right).

Many thanks to all coauthors for their work on this, and to @nbis.se for support on this project! The work was funded by VR and ERC, among others!

Is loss of distyly always associated with high selfing rates? And what are the genomic consequences? Read more about this in our new preprint on repeated loss of distyly in Linum, led by @zopos.bsky.social and @panazerv.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

I have read few papers as immediately useful and important as this one on Cacio e Pepe phase behavior.

Tl;dr: the starchy pasta water is absolutely critical to avoiding “mozzarella phase”

Distinguished professor proves effective mentorship is both art and science For the inaugural recipient of the Genetics Society of America Mentorship Award Dr. Brandon Gaut, leading a lab is not only scientific but personal.

Absolutely thrilled to see Dr. Brandon Gaut receive the inaugural @genetics-gsa.bsky.social Mentorship Award! 🏆🎉

Brandon brings humanity back to science, supports inclusive training, and pushes back on the publish-or-perish culture. So well deserved—congrats! 👏🙌

It is sad that even basic research needs to be defended with utility. For me, basic research is in the same category as art: civilized societies can't do without it, because we all want to know who we are and what our place in the natural world is -- questions that only science can answer.

Europe’s choice is clear.

To put science at the heart of its economy.

To become the home of scientific freedom and collaboration.

And to welcome talent from all over the world.

I’m glad to present the first elements of our Choose Europe Initiative.

Final motivation: Stockholm is beautiful.

We have a great research environment in Ecology and Evolution at Stockholm University! This is a 4-year employment & living in Sweden = free healthcare. Childcare is very affordable (ca 190 USD per month for full-time daycare per child) & pretty much everyone speaks English in Sweden. Apply!

One day left to apply! Not seeing many American applications so far, which puzzles me a little bit. If you have a four-year degree including advanced courses in Ecology or Evolution, you are likely eligible. Happy to answer detailed questions over DM or email.

I haven't seen the official announcement but would prefer to see more grants instead. I know it is not under the control of the ERC but I hope the EU manages instead to double the ERC budget. Take money away from the other research initiatives if needed.

This work would not have been possible without the efforts of lead authors @panazerv.bsky.social & @zopos.bsky.social , expert experimental work by Aleksandra Losvik, sequencing by @scilifelab-ngi.bsky.social and bioinformatic support from @mafraca.bsky.social @estellepw.bsky.social and @nbis.se 8/8

Our results in combination with those in e.g. Turnera and Primula suggest that convergent evolution of style length polymorphism might frequently involve the brassinosteroid pathway. 7/8
