How much of whatever @caseynewton.bsky.social or @kevinroose.com put together for tomorrow's episode of Hard Fork is being scrapped now?
Today computers hold out the promise of a means of instant translation of any code or language into any other code or language. The com-puter, in short, promises by technology a Pentecostal condition of universal understanding and unity. The next logical step would seem to be, not to translate, but to by-pass languages in favor of a general cosmic consciousness which might be very like the collective unconscious dreamt of by Bergson.
Is it just general knowledge that Marshall McLuhan wrote about the singularity 80 years ago? I mean… this guy…
Has anyone else noticed a complete absence of Butterfingers and Whoppers this entire Halloween? Nowhere to be seen!
Curious… has the Trump era triggered any revisiting of PT Barnum’s legacy? At the very least I can’t think of the musical in the same way.
I beg of you, please, do not assume or presume mental states or intentions. We are humans. We are imperfect, we are trying to learn. Not all lessons may be agreed with. But if we are to come to an understanding, we must assume good intentions (of individuals) until proven otherwise.
So kinda anti-nation in general? More an aspirational concept than a concrete policy plan? To be fair, I might feel less generosity toward that concept if teams of armed Native Americans had just tortured and murdered thousands
of folks in the suburbs of NY under a banner of "Land Back!" It matters.
Ah… I tried to signal that I was unfamiliar with the phrase… outside of my sphere of knowledge.
Ahh! Didn’t know that. That does weaken the objection, but it still offers no solution or consideration for the people living in Israel. I won’t use it. (Then again, slogans almost always make me uncomfortable, so I never use them anyway.)
But it’s not Palestinians in the slogan. It’s Palestine. And it makes specific geographic references. Its about land. It’s the people I’m concerned about. I cannot just care about Palestinians without caring about the people living in Israel.
And if it means murdering Jews to the folks who originally coined the phrase, the folks who just murdered a bunch of Jews to make their point, is that just an unfortunate semantic mismatch? Could we maybe make a better branding choice?
We’re outside of my sphere of knowledge. But to my obviously less activist and culturally Jewish ears, the phrase in question sounds like it condones the murder of Jews. You do you, but that choice may alienate (and even threaten) genuine allies.
Are you saying that charter doesn’t support the murder of all the Jews living in Israel? How should one understand the murder of Jews that was just carried out under that charter? Trying to understand…
Ok. I get your nuance. However, I think you should be aware that without the context of your interpretation, for most that phrase implies the expulsion (and for many, murder) of millions of people.
OK. Thanks for clarification. It does seem like an equally unhelpful, anti-human position. Pick your genocide.
Huh. This is the first I’ve heard the "From the river to the sea" line in the wild. That implies the complete removal of Israel, right? Is that intentional? Am I misunderstanding?
Probably enough video imagery out there to generate a reasonable spider mesh automatically (assuming there aren’t off the shelf models). The wizardy parts would probably need to be bespoke…
I dont imagine she’d mind being outed, but Flo from Progressive played Mrs Paroo at North Rockland High School in the late 80s. (I was the Mayor.)
So true. Such a deeply flawed film. And the lyrics are utterly pedestrian. If not for the production design, would be a complete waste of time.
Hard forkin’ or hardly forked?
Great appearance by @kenwhite.bsky.social on this week’s Ezra Klein Show. Highly recommended for a clear-eyed and law-literate overview of the Trump suits.
Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” is just NIN’s “Closer” with a thin veneer of entendre.
Howabout ENTING VICE, about a pair of ents going undercover to investigate the violent drug fueled underbelly of Middle Earth.
In Denmark there was a channel that showed all the characters in a daytime kids show sleeping (and farting). So when kids asked to see their favorite characters instead of going to sleep at bedtime, parents could turn on the TV and show them that it was their bedtime too!
I couldn’t even tell if it was SUPPOSED to be funny. :|
Yet somehow it’s popular in Scandinavia…
A song about a man who has ordered the same sandwich every day for 40 years… it’s the one thing that makes him feel in control of his life…
“Liver On Rye” seems like a missed opportunity…
For me it was when Elon released “The Twitter Files”. (Which would now be called “The X Files” I guess.) I just knew it wasn’t a place worth being anymore.
