Seconding this! And if anyone wants to mix it up, there's also "foundational," "groundbreaking,""important," "essential," "landmark," "revolutionary"—all of which convey something slightly different without reinforcing gendered norms or giving anyone the ick.

I was on a panel this week at the Royal Society, talking about AI and the future of women in science, and Wendy Hall asked us about the consequences of a future without women working in AI. And my reply was that we don't need to imagine that future. It's here. It's the present.

The original sin here, IMV, is that a lot of writers and editors hear 'reading age of ten years old' and go 'ah, I'm writing for a moron!'

The UK universities cutting geography have lost their bearings From climate change to geopolitics, the knowledge, skills and insights of geographers have never been more relevant, say five professors

Our new piece out today in Times Higher Education about the threats to Geography in the UK - particularly fieldwork - please do share. It links to a recent snapshot survey on the challenges being faced in UK HE, which highlights the inequities of the challenges, but also fears of what is yet to come

‘the image’ and cultural geography I've just been browsing a fascinating collection of short essays, gathered by Ben Anderson and Vickie Zhang in the summer of 2025. They invited contributions on 'the promise of cultural geography' and put all the responses into an open-access book which you can download here. It's a wonderful initiative in many ways, not least in its openness to contributions and its publication as open access.

I wrote a blog on images and cultural geography, prompted by an essay in an excellent collection convened by @benandersongeog.bsky.social @vickiezhang.bsky.social available here: research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/47...

Now I think about it, perhaps Cathy being driven to a breakdown by lack of economic independence and denial of personal autonomy while Heathcliff is unstinting in his cruelty and personal vengeance is indeed a story for our times, but the romcom vibe of the movie press tour still jar a bit

🔍 If in #digital #visual culture, images require screens and data networks to become visible, how does this mediate the #infrastructure of cities both materially and imaginatively?

Hollywood Is Losing Audiences to AI Fatigue Entertainment about or made with artificial intelligence has been missing the mark with viewers over the past year.

Published my first piece at @wired.com today, about a string of AI thrillers that have bombed (most recent being the hopelessly naive Chris Pratt vehicle 'Mercy'), the backlash to Darren Aronofsky's YouTube slop take on the American Revolution, and a grotesque nostalgia-bait Super Bowl ad:

The Smartness Mandate + The Ordinal Society = 2026(primer) This is a review of two of the best books I've read more or less recently on the currently digital moment ('best' meaning 'most useful for things I am thinking about right now'). I should admit I haven't got round to many of the flood of academic/popular books on AI yet, though I'm looking forward to Karen Hao's The Empire of AI…

I wrote an enthusiastic review of 'The Smartness Mandate' and 'The Ordinal Society', with added geographies.

"extensive powers" that hopefully exclude the use of #AIslop to visualise new infrastructure and other development. this kind of glutinous aerial AI landscape is so thoughtless about picturing place, the built environment and how they're experienced in multiple ways. @bildoperationen.bsky.social
