Nothing has killed more soldiers in the history of humanity than disease. While worst is a more complicated question Hegseth is absolutely the dumbest secretary of defense the United States has ever had. bsky.app/profile/ones...

CDC actually cannot come in and claim jurisdiction during a response- they have to be requested to assist by the public health department. And every state’s public health system is different.

Most people don’t know that public health is largely handled by state agencies. I didn’t until a couple of years ago! The CDC provides support and guidance (and a lot of money) but the work is largely governed by the states.

Perhaps it will have no plot to balance the many plots of the first one (I say that with love, I think it’s an amazing movie).

having given it due consideration, i have decided that "government by the stupidest most hateful morons to ever walk, or really more of sort of ooze gelatinously, on the planet" is a bad form of government and we should try something different

It's important to remember that Iran has a population of 92 million people. Actual human beings who have lives, who have dreams, who want to live.

I have nothing to say that matches the gravity of the situation. I just want peace and safety for everyone targeted by the insane whims of a madman.

I know this and you know this and we all know this but sometimes you gotta say the obvious thing out loud (so to speak) just so you don’t feel alone or crazy: our president is a deeply unwell and utterly vile man who shouldn’t be in charge of driving a golf cart much less the free world.

You may say, “Lindsay, let your loved ones buy you these books as birthday presents,” to which I say no! I will not wait for them! They will be delivered to my hands upon release!

I’ve already had a few incredible reads this year! Particularly Five Ways to Forgiveness by Ursula K. Le Guin,
The Fortunate Fall by Cameron Reed, and There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak.

Also, I went to a smaller satellite event this time, and every single speaker emphasized that protesting shouldn’t be the only thing you do. I learned about some groups and events that I had never heard of before, and got info about organizing in my neighborhood.

No Kings is not perfect (what is?) but today I saw little kids and folks in their 90s out protesting. It’s a balm to the soul, really.

PANEL 1: on a grey, gloomy background, GRAMP (and older bald man with a grey mustache) stands, bags under his eyes, looking down.
NARRATION: Friends, are you MASSIVELY STRESSED? Have you tried…

PANEL 2: On a bright pink background with yellow sparkles, bright purple text reads: Standing a small dog on your belly?

PANEL 3: GRAMP, now laying on the ground holding a thumbs up, the background bright and happy and full of sparkles. OSO, a fawn pug, stands on GRAMP’s belly, eyes dilated with delight.
TEXT: Because oh man that is ALL RIGHT.

You speak only the truth

This question made me realize how many of my romance reads have this dynamic… I think that The Brown Sisters series by Talia Hibbert are not completely free of it but it isn’t the main conflict of any of the books.

Public health is a wild field to be in because when things go right, people assume we're not doing anything useful, and when things go wrong, people assume it's our fault.

This pattern dates back to the beginning of public health.

Basically all magical realism, with complex characters and lyrical writing. I feel like The Fox Wife feels spiritually similar to The Listeners to me, while the others are more Raven Cycle/Crooked Saints.

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova comes to mind. Possibly The Fox Wife, by Yangsze Choo. Another reply mentioned Alix E. Harrow- I don’t know if I agree for all of them but Starling House reminds me of some of your work.

The African crested rat (Lophiomys imhausi) is a rabbit-sized rodent with patterned coat.

They have no natural predators which puzzled scientists because they don't display obvious deterrents to large African predators.

That's when studies found they were packing enough poison to kill an elephant.

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

One of the main reasons I don't use AI is that you have to fact-check every single thing it gives you and by the time I do that, I could have just done the research myself.

we were probably all up last night staring at the ceiling with our own version of the same thought running on endless loop, but mine looked something like this:

I hate these people to a degree that feels simultaneously corrosive to the soul, and also the only righteous response to this kind of evil
