Blind Guardian is just rock opera.

I mean, they did have A Night at the Opera, after all.

Since opera is a foundational thread in the evolution of Western classical‑influenced music, the title A Night at the Opera is likely a clue about how to understand their unconventional approach.

I’m mostly saying this for the folks reading along; I suspect you already know this.

There are a few more power metal examples that are more explicit about it, as the main exponents of classical-influenced metal, but more interestingly, a few examples in other metal.

Consider "Creeping Death," King Diamond, some Type O, for example. "Dead Skin Mask" brushes against it.

Blind Guardian is one of the rare bands that works with multiple voices inside a single song. That makes their music unique, dramatic, and expansive. It's an effective-dramatic storytelling device very few bands use, or even try.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" is operatic in the multi-voice execution, but not truly in character and agency.

Similar with Elton John and Kiki Dee, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart."

"Paradise by the Dashboard Light" deserves a mention here.

I'd consider other duets where both speakers have individual perspectives and agency, such as "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around."

Mindcrime is primarily interior monologue, with isolated moments of music-concrete and Sister Mary's occasional moments.

The Wall is mostly first person, spoken by Pink. "Mother" might be a mocking reimagining, rather than a second speaker. "The Trial," and "Another Brick" are true opera.

Even bands and works that are explicitly "rock opera" rarely switch perspective in the vocals and lyrics. It's especially hard to do, both as a writer, ensemble, and vocalist.

In Tommy, the "characters" are one song-a-piece, more or less, plus Tommy himself, and a narrator-chorus.

Most rock and metal bands default to a single poetic speaker: the interior angst or worldview of the lead singer or lyricist. Even bands considered “literary,” like Rush or Iron Maiden, usually present one narrator at a time, across various subject matter.

The deeper point is that opera isn’t defined “big vibrato vocals” or “theatricality,” although those appear. It’s defined by multiple personas that are dramatized through music. Different speakers, different perspectives, different emotional and narrative functions expressed in the writing itself.

I don’t disagree, although I’d argue they’re power metal and rock‑opera at the same time.

Oh wait no, I got my history wrong. 2016 was self titled. EoBL was 2018. We're still young!

Hunter-Seeker, by Necropanther from the album Eyes of Blue Light

If you're unfamiliar, I recommend sampling "Hunter Seeker." Very much in the running for my most listened track of the past decade.

Thank you for enjoying what we do!

Can you believe it's been 10 years of EoBL? I guess that's our 2016 challenge.
We're still playing, still writing, still working on new music.
