Could confirming King Charles’ visit to the US be a smart move on the part of the UK? Could it help exert good sense leverage over Trump? Very bad look if the Iran war is ongoing when Charles arrives.

A leaked memo, a Maga-style hat and a trail of broken pledges – it’s Labour’s great housing betrayal | Aditya Chakrabortty Ignore the bombast: Steve ‘build, baby, build’ Reed’s boast looks likely to end in targets more pathetic than they are now, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

Please read my column today in conjunction with Aditya's. The government pretends to be delivering housing to those who need it, but is in fact just appeasing the big corporations. Then it blames nature protections, and rips those down at their behest as well.

The Blogs: Today is the beginning of ‘the day after’ No one won this war. It’s time to accept that our shared future lies here, in a region that wants a safe Israel and a free Palestine

You’ll search long and hard for a more powerful denunciation of the Gaza genocide by an Israeli journalist. Brutal.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind - we must put revenge aside and end the war in Gaza. Our immediate tasks as Israelis and Palestinians are to end the war forever, change all of our leaders, and make sure that this war must be the last war. We cannot and must not keeping doing this.

Interesting that all the usual suspects say the BBC was wrong to broadcast Bob Vylan’s anti-IDF chants, but not that the BBC are wrong to repeat them in every news bulletin. Presumably because newsreaders would never repeat genuinely racist and violence-inciting slogans.

He didn’t say that.

He chanted “Death to the IDF”.

If he’d have changed “Death to the Russian Army”, the Daily Mail wouldn’t have splashed on it, or demanded his arrest.

This rag shows infinitely more rage over a chant than the IDF incinerating thousands of little children.

Yeah, right “de-escalation” is really served by sending planes to the region. Starmer’s government really is a lame duck, and with no ethical core.

Excellent clarity on #BBCR4 Today programme from @craigbennett3.bsky.social on Rachel Reeves’ fixation with economic growth at any cost and her “bats and newts” comment. Turns out the “£100m HS2 bat shed” is HS2’s idea.

Audio books are like the very first story-telling. Needs to be a good reader (even better a good cast - try Lincoln in the Bardo, a masterpiece on Audible). Even better is a gifted reader while I'm reading the Kindle version at the same time. Like the first stories on a parent's lap. Sublime.

Stunningly good article @nesrinemalik.bsky.social nails where we’re at in 2024. Reads like history from the future: back in the 21st century people weren’t all blind to the fails of globalisation and neoliberalism. This Labour govt could help shift the world in a new direction. But no chance.
