Yet another reminder that housing policy should be designed first and foremost to meet the housing needs of citizens. Introducing unfair loopholes to incentivise immigration has (predictably) backfired. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Netflix's Miyazaki doc is blissful. Seeing him drive to work in a battered (left hand drive!) 2CV, and then hearing from his late producing partner who seems to be a bit of a jerk, and then at the end when the Toho suits come in, I did wonder whether he has made as much money as he might.
In Denmark and elsewhere in the Nordics we have received prepping lists from the government in light of recent geopolitical escalations, but i havent heard of anybody developing community prepping initiatives. Inspiring. newrepublic.com/article/1896...
Highly recommend the Open City podcast with @matthewlloydr.bsky.social for all urbanists. London is a unique city but so many of the topics covered are universal, and the podcast does a great job of digging deeper incl. some genuine debate with high profile guests. open.spotify.com/show/35kdEOF...
Image of deck chairs in front of a sauna
Deck chairs on a wooden deck looking out to sea
A view from the shore of Hasting Pier with a view out to sea
Two showers and a cold water bucket against a backdrop of beachside apartments
Wonderful experience at Samphire Sauna on Hastings Pier.
I definitely need to find a copy of this - looks great.
“Non-speculative housing” is such an empowering alternative to the heavily politicised alternative labels.
Never ceases to amaze me how the oppressor seeks to define the culture of the oppressed. Who gets to decide what indigenous 22st century urbanism looks like if not the indigenous community?
An imaginary dream map hand printed in grayscale. One sees the topography of the Salmon River estuary and the Cascade Head trail near the Oregon Coast along with elements of the night sky and neurotransmitters associated with dream sleep. The map contains the strongly etched topography of the shoreline which includes three islands and the more subtle paths which mark the hiking trail up to the Cascade Head meadow. by Kindra Crick

A six-panel cartoon titled "real and implied birds". In the two panels in the top row, there's a rough legged-hawk sailing through the sky, next to a smooth legged hawk, which has smooth human legs. In the second row, there's a great-crested flycatcher looking dapper, next to an ok-crested flycatcher that has just a slightly less nice crest. In the third row, there's a mountain chickadee standing up on stones, next to a valley chickadee peeking out from a dip between stones. In the fourth row, there's a least bittern standing in some reeds, next to a most bittern that is enormous and stomping through a city, with people running in fear, helicopters overhead, and an overturned car on fire.
Another thing I made this year: Real and implied birds.
New zine drop on geoz.one! "Strange Natures" is a collection of reflections from different places, times and vantage points, different ways of noticing, seeing, listening and inhabiting reality.

Bookshelf is a community-driven platform that connects people through books and shared interests. fjellfolk.co/bookshelf/
It really is - the connection to the road is very tactile so great for tricky conditions.
Is it OK to ride a fixie in 2024? Are we past the bike lane tribal nonsense of London circa 2005?
I love Copenhagen. The cycle lane I use on the school run each morning…

Great news: Cycling in London is gaining momentum.
Every day, 1.33 million journeys are made by bike in the capital—that’s an increase of 26% since 2019.
I’ll keep working hard with boroughs to make our streets even safer, encouraging more Londoners to travel on two wheels.
Long line up of people on bikes waiting for the light to change on a Paris street, in a separated bike-lane.
Paris definitely wasn’t always this way. This is very recent. It wasn’t magic. It just took vision and leadership. Your city could choose leadership too.

Just when I thought I've seen it all, a PostgreSQL extension shows up that allows you to embed a SQLite database inside a table. github.com/frectonz/pgl...
