Visualising the Benefits of Geodiversity International Geodiversity Day 2025 is approaching, and many people worldwide have organised events based on their professional or personal connections with geodiversity; whether these be around…

🎨 To help promote the benefits of geodiversity for Geodiversity Day 2025, a team from the Open University have worked with artscientist Dr Vicky Bowskill to produce this amazing image!

I have been teaching introductory computer programming for geoscientists for almost forty years now. This year I have added in using AI. [Insert expletive here], what a game changer. Still have to cover fundamentals for understanding but I can spend far more time actually explaining things.

Earth's heat to produce electricity for homes in UK clean energy first Water super-heated by rocks will also provide the UK's first domestic supply of the critical mineral lithium.

Great news from #Cornwall, where #geothermal energy and lithium are now being generated from deep, hot granite. ⚒️

A variety of letter stencils.

A variety of letter stencils. What we used to use before computers for labelling diagrams.

I still have my stencils. Yes, kids, this is what we used to use to label diagrams before computers.

Used to use a combination of these and Letraset dry transfer lettering.

If we are sharing old hand-drawn thin sections…
From my undergraduate mapping report, Lukmanierpass, Switzerland, a thin section line drawing of a graphitic schist.
Includes the lost art of lettering using stencils.

In the UK, near-surface geophysics comes under the purview of the Geological Society of London where as solid-earth geophysics comes under the Royal Astronomical Society. Costs me a bloody fortune in fellowship fees every year being a fellow of both.

Depends on background I think. My degree was geology but doctorate in geophysics. My PhD advisor was from a physics background. He wouldn’t consider himself a geologist but I do consider myself one.

I’ve switched from Duo Lingo to Babbel. I much prefer it, but I‘m more intermediate level than once-fluent.

Agreed. Newcastle-under-Lyme is the largest UK town without a railway station.

Autistic voices are an overlooked minority in geosciences Nature Geoscience - Autism remains an under-recognized and under-represented aspect of inclusivity conversations in geosciences. We highlight an urgent need for support and recognition of autistic...

#Autistic people in #geoscience, #highereducation, and beyond, are asking you to understand who they are, rather than what they are. If you would be willing to listen, please consider taking 15 minutes of your time to read this short article:

I’m wondering if the official location / origin time is a bit off for this event. All the UK records that I have seen have the P and S predicted times about 4-5 seconds ahead of the actual arrivals.

That’s a nice ring ditch you have there, it would be a shame if someone dug a powerline to a mobile phone mast through it. ⚒️🧪

I was finishing my PhD on earthquake source mechanics when the Hasegawa and Kanamori paper came out. I quite liked the idea at the time that it was a single-couple event caused by the landslide.

Person pushing a radar kart across a green field.

So good to be outdoors supervising a GPR survey today, but why do I always get asked to do this stuff in winter rather than summer?

Historic landscape with spectacular views across the region. No wonder our forebears venerated this place.

A lecture on geohazards in the Peak District by Vanessa Banks of the BGS last week attributed it to the volcanic ash layers between the limestones.

Can understand Bowland Shales and Coal Measure marine bands, but the Limestone Peak is unusual I think.
