One step further: it should be unthinkable that we would register people for the draft without first making sure that they are registered to vote. And indeed: it makes no sense generally to hold elections without making every effort to make it as easy as possible to vote! That’s what democracies do.

The Murderbot Diaries are one of my favs, too. If you like world-building fantasy, check out @marthawells.com other series: Books of the Raksura. Another amazing series.
Any recent favs or recs?
We’re living under a racist fascist kleptocracy and @nytimes.com is asking the hard hitting journalistic questions.
Senate Republicans refused to convict Trump after Jan 6.
Republican SCOTUS appointees gave him immunity.
Republicans in Congress today stand idly by as he unleashes death and destruction across the globe.
We are now at the whims of a mad king because GOP leaders have refused to constrain him.
Ugh, there not their (second one)
And this is the fan moment of "OMG OMG OMG, they noticed me!" 😊
Seriously though, the Mossa and Pleiti series is so fun, intriguing, and well-written. I look forward to their future adventures (fingers crossed their are more in the works).
👉🏻 @older.bsky.social 👍🏻
Highly recommend The Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti series (3 books so far), by Malka Older. Intriguing SF mysteries with quite a bit of non-standard representation.
Older's Centenal Cycle Trilogy is next up in my TBR list.
Boundaries, FTW! One of the most important things I've learned through the years.
To be clear: the SAVE Act does not simply require the identification voting ALREADY requires. It demands proof of CITIZENSHIP— a birth certificate with a name that matches yours now (bye, bye, married women), or a passport— both of which are expensive and take a long time to obtain.
This is how our government has been corrupted:
1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians
2) Elected officials rewrite rules in donors' favor
3) Donors make huge profit
4) Repeat
We must get big money out of politics. It’s the root of all evil in Washington.
Sometimes the absurdity of American life just makes me laugh. Millions of people have decided that instead of listening to doctors or healthcare professionals, they’ll listen to a guy who used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats.
CW: transphobia.
See, this is why it can be painful to know too much history.🫤
This post implies that what is happening in Kansas is *similar* to what the nazis did.
But it's not just similar. It's *identical*.
In 1933, nazis revoked trans people's documents. Before 1938.
Paragraph 175 and 183.
Woohoo! And now's a good time to plug @illustrevor.bsky.social (Trevor Fraley) if you want to commission something special from a wonderful artist!
And now I'm questioning whether it's time to change my avatar (even though I know you know I don't make trash posts). Damnit, man, I really like my custom drawing by @illustrevor.bsky.social!
With this Tourettes discourse, I'm seeing a common pattern of conversations where Black and white people see the world very differently:
* Lack of empathy for Black people
* Lack of differentiation between malicious intent and harm
The empathy that I am seeing, is coming from folks with Tourettes
While I'm glad to see him involved and I appreciate his perspective, my first thought was "why in the hell would we want him instead of Jasmine Crockett?"
There's a link between the AI disruption and the authoritarian political attacks on expertise. Highly educated white collar folks considered ourselves to be a powerful culture, on the basis of our expertise & credentials. But that's not where power comes from, and we're learning that the hard way.
The Super Bowl is a window into how much the U.S. economy has changed. I remember when it was mostly ads for cars, beer and stuff you’d find in the grocery store. Now it’s all AI, gambling, crypto (also gambling) and Ozempic.
When my kid was 4 we started Bedtime Qs: ask anything you want during snuggles. His first Q: "What happens after we die?" Day 2: "Why do some people do mean things?" Day 3: "What was the very first plant?" MANY followup Qs. Explaining Gay was easy!
As a professional technical writer in the software industry, I'm shaking my head for several reasons.
1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.
5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.
This was an enlightening read for me! Highly recommend!
This is a lovely knitting store, and also just generally crafters are the best. 🧶
It’s kinda wild living in the dystopian future from my favorite works of fiction.
Here's what I expect from Democrats. Their goal is to win big in the midterms. Do some tepid sanctioning of the Trump regime. Then hopefully win the presidency in 28. They want to reinforce that the status quo still works. They don't want to acknowledge the institutions are broken.
