The image displays the Adorant, a prehistoric figurine carved from mammoth ivory. It is a small ivory plaque depicting a human-like figure with arms raised in a pose of adoration or worship. The reverse side features orderly sequences of notches and dots, which researchers suggest may represent an early precursor to written language or a structured communication system.
The recent discovery of 40,000-year-old notches carved into artifacts suggests that human writing began earlier than thought. Find out what this protowriting suggests about the emergence of complex thought on this week’s @bipisci.bsky.social. 🧪

A small accomplishment for today! I have just passed 2.7 million reads of my articles for The Conversation.

Over the weekend, Leo, the first US-born pope, entered the international political arena when he said prayer for peace is “a bulwark against that delusion of omnipotence that surrounds us and is becoming increasingly unpredictable and aggressive.”

Cleaning up Nutella from the instruments
NASA’s Orion spacecraft is seen in the well deck of USS John P. Murtha as NASA teams begin to work on post-flight processing while transiting back to Naval Base San Diego, Saturday, April 11, 2026, in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. NASA’s Artemis II mission took NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, commander; Victor Glover, pilot; Christina Koch, mission specialist; and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, mission specialist on a nearly 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth. Following a splashdown at 5:07 p.m. PDT (8:07 p.m. EDT) on April 10, NASA, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Air Force teams recovered the crewmembers and spacecraft onboard the recovery ship and transferred the Wiseman, Glover, Koch, and Hansen from the ship to Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. where they boarded a NASA aircraft to return to Houston, Texas. A photo of the live NASA tv coverage of the Artemis capsule hanging from its parachutes. My cat Pablo is reaching up the tv screen to try to swat Artemis out of the sky.
#Artemis almost had a disaster.
Two additional things made the #ArtemisII return better yesterday:
1. There really was no association with Musk, etc. Maybe that is my observation bias, being on here (but also didn't notice it on Insta, Mastodon. Maybe a bit on LinkedIn)
2. Photos of people's cats going for Orion.
Best!
"Planet Earth: You Are A Crew" - Christina Koch
Highly recommend checking out Koch's part of this, as it is *extremely good*.
Her discussion is not US-focused; it's globally focused. Really like it.
The specific part I am talking about starts at timestamp: 56:19 and runs for approx. 3 mins.

This one is worth it.
First PoC and first woman to go around another world. Don't stop talking about this point. It's important.

Thank you from Oz.
Much respect 💜🤍💚
I love this photo of astronaut Christina Koch looking back at Earth from Artemis II.
She's the first woman to see the full sphere of our beautiful planet.
Welcome home to the crew, and thank you for reminding us of all we can discover together.
