That early-life conditioning runs deep, and is part of the reason I never wanted children. I can't trust myself not to get violent when frustrated, as I did when I was left to watch my much-younger siblings. They've since forgiven me, but I still grieve that I abused them in the way I was.

Honestly, I used to be one of those, even after many years of therapy. I was both spanked and slapped across the face as a kid, and I still find myself reflexively thinking "that kid needs a smack" when seeing a child being bratty in public. It takes conscious effort to remember that's abuse.
