Finally read Bottom's Up And the Devil Laughs by @kerryhowley.bsky.social. Can't think of a time when I've read nonfiction writing so smart and inventive that even events/people I had thought I'd read about before, even ones I've reported and written about myself, felt 100% new. Incredible book.

Love seeing conservatives argue for separation between church and state but only when religious doctrine conflicts with blowing people up
This is a really important piece. Detroit has been coddled for decades through bipartisan protectionism. The US should let China sell affordable EVs, get them to invest by building EV manufacturing here, and let Detroit complete. And if Detroit can't complete, they don't deserve to be in business.

dont sleep on Outside Over There
This is a goddamn delight
“A whole civilization will die tonight” is the most vile thing a US president has ever said, certainly during the post-1945 era when they’ve had the power to kill civilizations with the dropping of a bomb. I’m staring into the darkness. May this not be one of the most fateful days in human history.
this is a misreading, as I have explained.
you’re willfully misreading it but ok
normal refers to “not in a state of grief,” not as a judgement on the manner of grieving.
That is not at all how the passage was intended or reads in context — not even the context in the snippet suggests this.
This is NOT what I signed up for
devastating piece, by one of my very favorite nonfiction writers
This is quite a read, full of anger and bewilderment. Beautiful work.
"The parents of dead children are a problem. They stand opposed to our most basic and necessary illusions."
An absolutely haunting story by @kerryhowley.bsky.social that resist all such illusions. A story of Camp Mystic, and the 27 girls who died there unnecessarily, that I never knew.
Horrific & sensitively reported story by the peerless @kerryhowley.bsky.social. Seeing the delusion on display here I can't help but think about climate change, whose effects (eg torrential rain & floods) will also be treated as acts of God, when they are the work of people nymag.com/intelligence...
This is an excellent, brutal, cuttingly angry feature.
I wrote about a camp, 27 girls who drowned due to astonishing failures to plan, and hundreds of families going back anyway. nymag.com/intelligence...
ultimately i like getting extremely worked up about something that doesn‘t affect me very much and then forgetting about it promptly
Pete Hegseth came to national prominence and to Trump’s attention specifically for his defense of men accused of war crimes by their fellow American soldiers.
Chart of trends in recovered organs from circulatory deaths
The number of organs available for donation has risen massively in the past five years.
It seems to be the result of technological advances in preserving organs after circulatory death.

One day in the future, this is going to hang on the wall of a museum exhibit people visit in silence.
I’m teaching a weeklong creative nonfiction seminar in Paris this coming spring. More info here : www.wice-paris.org/paris-writer...
