It’s ridiculous how many aspects of higher ed run on purely “donated” time of faculty. We do not value research if folks are not compensated for this work.

Anyone here ever play Dredge? Been loving their Lovecraftian horror fishing boat vibe.

If you weren't alive in the 80s, it is hard to explain just what a massively earthshattering moment this is, now I know what it felt like to hear that, smallpox was preventable in real-time

The amount of times I white-knuckled it through Rivington’s camp to keep Grub safe from Orrin?? Plus dialogue from the street cats in the lower city were so great!

I used to be a tech enthusiast. I am becoming a tech dethusiast. I don’t want any more tech to buy. I don’t want smart appliances. I don’t want smart pants. I don’t want smart dumbbells.

I just want things that I can buy and that work for 20 years.

Stop KOSA KOSA is a censorship bill that won’t make kids safe. Instead, it'll put all internet users at risk, especially youth. If you believe in a free and open internet, tell your lawmakers to reject #KOSA!

If you live in the US, please write or call your elected representatives RIGHT NOW to try and stop KOSA— yes even if you've already done it— because this bill not only absolutely will harm LGBTQIA+ populations across the country, but that is even its main sponsor's admitted stated goal. Please.

Frozen grapes are also good if the nausea is bad. It’s kind of a mini grape sorbet/popsicle situation. I feel your pain, I am also a morning nausea person. This, plus meds & body rhythm mismatch has also got me avoiding teaching the early morning sections. Just no.

Every year the University of Chicago has a book sale with 90% off a bunch of fascinating, obscure titles on art, history, science, writing, you name it. Most of the books are under $10, and you won't find most of them outside an academic library. Check it out: press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/vi...

Thanks for the insight, I’ll have to check out your writing on it. I’m trying to replace social media scrolling with more reading this year. A device with fewer bells and whistles is probably the way to go.

I’m looking at those refurbished kindles and wondering if they are worth it - paperwhite, oasis or the Scribe - because of course the academic in me is like “don’t you want to take notes??”

It's December, so here are a collection of end of year digital housekeeping tasks you can do while chilling out for the holidays in order to improve your privacy and security for entering 2024 on a good footing. You don't have to do all of them, but they're stuff to consider!
