eh it's good enough, different translation units have to use the get_instance method. If i wanted to really make it opaque i would need to put everything behind APIs and getters/setters

singleton pattern is nice, no need to pass around an extra parameter for the pointer every time you wanna mutate the state, since every method can just grab the instance pointer.
