The Sarah Debbink Langenkamp Active Transportation Safety Act (S. 944/ H.R. 2011) is needed to make our infrastructure safer from distracted driving for peds and bicyclists.
The Driver Technology and Pedestrian Safety Act (H.R. 3360) is also needed to require research on the impact of touch-screen based systems on driver distraction and recommendations to address this hazard.
Congress needs to pass The Magnus White and Safe Streets for Everyone Act (H.R. 7353) to make this a reality. saferoads.org/2026-magnus-...
According to @iihs-hldi.bsky.social, “Crash avoidance technology may be the most promising avenue for reducing crash risks related to distractions of any type.” AEB with pedestrian, bicyclist & motorcyclist detection should be standard equipment on new cars.
Over 3,200 people were killed in distracted driving-related crashes in 2024. Behind every number is a loved one who should still be here. Advocates is working this Distracted Driving Awareness Month & every month to advance commonsense laws & promote proven safety technology.
"This legislation is a reasonable & required step to make proven safety technology protect everyone on our roads...A bicycle or motorcycle ride should not end in an ambulance ride." Cathy Chase, President of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety
Public support for this policy is strong. In polling released by Advocates last week, 73% of respondents supported requiring AEB systems to detect & respond to bicyclists & motorcyclists in addition to pedestrians. saferoads.org/2026-av-tech...
Data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month showed that 1,103 bicyclists, 6,228 motorcyclists & 7,080 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2024.
Advocates & 85 organizations endorse The Magnus White & Safe Streets for All Act sponsored by @repyvetteclarke.bsky.social & @neguse.house.gov It would require automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems to detect & respond to bicyclists & motorcyclists.
