I’ve never seen an actual technical breakdown of what’s happening there. Assuming this is the same deal of course, as in both games the difference between RTAO on/off seems almost nonexistent? This is in contrast to other games with proper RTAO where you can definitely tell like BF2042 & GTA V.

Hey @dachsjaeger.bsky.social I assume DF will cover the Death Stranding 2 PC port, and I have a specific question regarding its RTAO setting.
IIRC we’ve seen a similar RTAO toggle for Spider-Man 2 on PC/PS5 Pro, which was also similarly meant to “augment” the SSAO. What does that actually mean? 1/3

At the end of the day DLSS outputs a 2D image as the upscaled result. That 2D image can look drastically different than the input. So while the input geometry is untouched, what you see on screen post DLSS can be entirely different as it has no concept of geometry at that point.

I don't agree with the toxicity that DF is facing but the backlash over that video is more than warranted. Also what is there to see "in person" exactly? We're talking about pixels on a screen. It would look the same to them as it does to me seeing it in their coverage.

Oliver, you guys can't seriously be excited for this dogshit right? It's quite literally just a tweakable genai filter. It completely circumvents any and all rendering. We should not at all accept this as the future of gaming and rendering. Really disappointing coverage from you guys.

Skinned BVH Comparision, without and with, the ancient dragon creates lot of occlusion /reflections in scene. Note there is no proper light bleed yet have used a default grey for skinned characters right now.

Testing out HWRT, BVH. Now all lighting is combined. The left image is with Skyshadowmap, Sunshadow, SSGI + SSR. The Right image is just SunShadow, Now Skylighting/SSGI/SSR is now all wrapped in HWRT. It just works

More BVH work, Now able to seamlessly load BVH across the zones as each zone have their own BVH(BLASes) with some overlaps in-between. I am yet to move the builds to Async compute queues and is next on my list as all this is foundational work for RT.

Progress on BVH/HWRT Implementation. Support lookup buffers to fetch the Triangle data for hit point, other attributes like vertex colors will be added as well. The Normal is important part as bounce calculations will be based on that.

Also the cubemap fallback for RT reflections is still extremely flawed, as it only captures the environment around the player but is projected onto everything including buildings in the distance, meaning that if you go under a bridge for example it will be reflected onto those buildings which is bad

I really loved the coverage of GTA V Enhanced on PC that you did at DF, I feel like it’s worth mentioning though that it seems like the ocean in the game is left off the BVH, which causes boats to reflect the ocean floor and glow orange which looks very odd.
