“I also want teachers to know that if we could exert more agency over what assignments we were doing, we might all be more interested in what we’re doing and care more about learning.”
Re-upping: if you work at EPA, NOAA, FEMA, NIH, CDC, USDA or other agencies that involve really any sort of science in their work, and you have something you want the public to know, I would always love to hear from you. Signal is davelevitan.26 and you can remain anonymous.

The report highlights how AI’s expansion is tied to critical minerals, energy, water, land, and labor—and why interdisciplinary approaches are essential for AI governance.🧵
Hi. Hello. GRAMMARLY IS NOT A WRITING TOOL. IT IS SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM AND LINGUISTIC HOMOGENIZATION IN A TRENCHCOAT.
Super post from @evanshieh.bsky.social in the @civicsoftech.bsky.social newsletter this week!
Stop calling it “AI literacy” if it doesn’t teach history

a photo grid of dolls with protest t-shirts and signs.
I need everyone on Normal People internet to know that American Girl Doll Instagram is doing doll protests today. There are tiny t-shirts and signs. AND THEN I realized it's a joint protest with the Barbie ppl, where there are EVEN TINIER SIGNS.
Hot pink chairs and benches stacked up in a protest with protesters hiding behind them as law enforcement fires upon the barricades with rubber bullets and tear gas
RIOS rios.imagines RIOS rios.imagines Images of the bright pink Civic furniture line that we designed for@grandpark_la "The Park for Everyone," being used by LA protesters stopped us in our tracks. These pieces were designed to move, adapt, welcome, connect - and now protect. We stand in solidarity with our city during moments of civic expression in support of unjust treatment, and we are reminded of why we design: for our community, diversity, and a sense of belonging. Everyone saw Grand Park's hot pink benches being stacked into a barricade on Sunday. What an exceptional statement from RIOS, the benches' designers instagram.com/rios.imagines

I struggle with the reporting on ChatGPT in education because it often confirms society’s negative bias against young people—oh no, this generation is unsaveable!—when it’s possible to just educate people to be less credulous about it. which is why I wrote this: so teachers could print and assign it

"You can no longer make students do the reading or the writing. So what’s left? Only this: give them work they want to do. And help them want to do it. What, again, is education? The non-coercive rearranging of desire." (Emphasis in original)

Free teaching and learning resource that we need right now: how NYC students, parents, and educators saw injustice in their schools and resisted it. How they worked to build the just schools they deserved.
What sort of "AI literacy" will the government/industry be pushing as it's made clear one is never supposed to ever mention "bias"? 2ndbreakfast.audreywatters.com/executive-di...

The authors called this "a guide for connecting to who students are and who they hope to be." It is for instructors in every field, not just writing teachers.

Seriously, the rational thing to do with LLMs would have been "that's cool, come back when you have a real application for this that justifies the cost and you've made it more energy efficient." We don't have to dump billions into every new computer knickknack! We can have higher standards!!
Thank you for this!
I ❤️ this piece, and I’m showing it to students today.
